AND WE HAVE A LIQUOR CONTROL BOARD, WHY?

I don’t drink, so, the decision by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to raise their fees won’t affect me. Unless the restaurant owners don’t raise liquor prices and decide to get their money back by raising food prices instead.

There will be a lot of discussion about this on the talk shows and plenty of political fallout, but, pardon me for reducing it to a simple question.

Why is the state of Pennsylvania in the retail liquor business?

  It’s simple. We have way too many legislators with their head in their posterior. You also need to factor in the sheep who elect the same morons time after time. Combine these two factors and you have the backwards and short sighted Commonwealth of PA.

  The same reason we still have toll booth collectors despite the proliferation of easy pass and the machines to self-pay with coins and paper money. Just like the garage attendant that stands by the pay machine at city garages while you put your money in the machine. Just like the Port Authority workers that stand there as you pay the fare box. Don’t try to figure it out, just pull that lever with a D on it.

  Liquor laws vary from state to state. In Michigan we have an annoying bottle and can deposit law (ten cents each). No alcohol can be legally sold from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Saturday and from 2 a.m. to noon Sunday. Presumably that puts more butts in the church pews of people who would otherwise be drinking in a bar.

  Did you happen to see the idiotic vending machines that the PA control board is using in grocery stores so that people can ‘conveniently’ purchase a bottle of wine to have with dinner? I have never seen such a bureaucratic horse by committee solution in my life.
  Lets see, lets buy wine vending machines, get people to fill them, get people to service them, deliver them, (and hopefully these will be state employee’s !! ) just to be able to sell a lousy bottle of wine.
  Only one thing would make it complete…..if the machines only accepted Susan B. Anthony dollars.

  those machines are retarded. what sane person wants to blow into a machine to verify they aren’t drunk before they buy a bottle of merlot?

  I am in the bar business and I am sick of increased taxes and fees and the introduction of new taxes every time you turn around. As soon as it is possible for me I am going to get out of this business in this state, move to another state and open up the same kind of place, and I am sure I’m just one of thousands with the same mindset. How many times to these idiots have to make the same mistakes before they figure out that they are indeed mistakes? Or maybe they are not mistakes, maybe it’s intentional. Perhaps they view the hard working people of Pennsylvania as nothing more than worker ants here to raise money for government excess and mismanagement.

  Couple thoughts:
  -PennDot and the PLCB seem to have the same business plan. Pay ridiculous salaries and benefits while the public puts up with higher prices and potholes.
  -If I complained to a liquor store clerk, would I be black-balled from all the stores?
  -Clearly the old wise Legislature thinks that if I walked into a PA gas station and could buy alcohol, I’d drink myself into a public rampage. People seem to act normal in the other states.
  -and the people keep moving out…….I may wise up and join them one day.

  Sorry, it just mind-numbing to think if I just cross an invisible state line, I can now make all my purchases at one location.

  Your government at work. I don’t drink but I wonder how people who do drink feel about paying an extra couple of bucks to fund the pensions of liquor store employees who never should have existed in the first place.

  Have you ever talked to one of the liquor store clerks? If you ask them a question it is like your are asking them for an organ or their first born.
  I too may be joining the ranks of transplanted Pittsburghers. I recently found out I am losing my job at the end of the quarter. From what I have heard the job market around here is not that great; however I have had friends put out resumes to out of state openings and the job offers are more frequent and better paying (and no, they are not bad areas/states).

  Like alot of people of my generation, I left the area shortly after college for a job with a company. I really had never been out of the area, other than vacations. I was amazed when I got to my new state that I could go to the supermarket, or gas station and get beer or wine. There were no state stores. It was very easy and convenient. It is amazing how a majority of the states can survive without state stores, LOL. Just another state governement bureaucracy that provides union jobs with inflated wages that drains millions from the tax payers. It is also a ridiculous concept. Eliminate the state stores, and privatize the turn pike. That would save the state millions.
