ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL (TALK)?

Michael Wilbon has an excellent column in today’s Washington Post about the beyond the pale popularity of the NFL.

He points out that it was in 1965 that a survey first showed that football had passed baseball as America’s favorite sport.

My problem with football being the most popular sport has always been that it meant that talking about games had become more  popular than actually watching  games.

If we had a real Major League Baseball team playing here and it was in a pennant race, believe it or not, we would actually be spending more time watching Pirates’ games than we have spent talking about Dennis Dixon’s potential.

It’s easy to understand why someone would rather watch an NFL game than a Major League Baseball game because it’s easy to see why someone would rather watch football than baseball.

That’s a matter of taste.

I just think it would be better for the mental health of the country if baseball had remained the national pastime. Instead of sitting in their cubicles pouring over their NFL fantasy rosters and looking forward to the games that are three days away, most sports fans would be looking over the box scores and getting ready to watch tonight’s game. ( I realize there’s an NFL game tonight. You know what I mean.)

Baseball was so much a part of the country’s fabric that, despite the fact that games were televised in the early ’50s, it wasn’t until 1971 that World Series games were played at night.

Imagine the NFL deciding its championship on a Tuesday afternoon.

It used to happen all the time in baseball.

So, yeah, the NFL is our most popular sport. But it’s at least a little bit disturbing that the country has become more interested in a sport that involves more talking than actual watching.

Or maybe it isn’t. There’s always the chance that I’m the one with a mental health issue.
