Please tell me that the Dixon thingy is finally over. “Athletic QBs” do not work in the NFL. Show me brains. Dixon has more athletic ability in his pinky than any of us could hope to have anywhere….but that only goes so far in today’s NFL. Don’t drop the clipboard Dennis.
I would call Bret Favre an “athletic QB. Of course, he’s white. John Elway was pretty “athletic, too”. Another white guy. I think Terry Bradshaw was pretty “athetic, too”. White, of course. I’ve never understood why “athletic” QBs are always stupid.
Dixon’s just not athletic enough.
If you take a look at most of the successful, and winning, quarterbacks in the NFL they all had one trait-good passing ability. Not necessarily pocket passers, but having the ability to read a defense and throw with accuracy. Some had the ability to run when needed (Bradshaw, Elway, Montana, Young) others did not (Fouts, Marino) but that didn’t make them any more or less successful.
I prefer to call these guys like Dixon running quarterbacks. They got by on their athletic ability and/or playing in a good system through high school and college. However, when they get to the pros, they find that most DB’s and LB’s can catch or at least contain them.
And it is not a black/white thing either. I can name some QB’s in college that were considered good running QB’s but flopped in the NFL because they couldn’t pass: Eric Crouch and Jason White (both won the Heisman while pilling up big numbers in passing and rushing). Also up for debate: Alex Smith.
I think “group think” by the NFL coaching fraternity has something to do with it. They all fall in love with their systems and they don’t like guys who improvise. That’s what running QBs do.
Sorry, I no longer get the Pittsburgh stations. I’m stuck with State College channels (thanks DirectTV). What topics did you cover?
Steeler QBs and why Tomlin felt the need to play Roethlisberger, much less start him….that was the number one topic….also Dixon playing himself down to 3rd string. I think he should be 4th with Leftwich 3rd.
Still think Dennis Dixon is too exciting for the NFL John?
Actually, yes. I also think he’s their 4th best QB. It’s not just Dixon who I think is too “exciting”. It’s any QB who doesn’t stand in the pocket and “read his progressions”. I understand that that’s what works, but I think the fans are cheated when cosches fail to develop systems that would allow QBs like Dixon to excel. He’s just not that good, but his style is also way too exciting for the boring NFL offenses. There has never been a more exciting player in football than Randle El when he was at Indiana. I’m not saying he should be the Steelers QB, I’m saying that fans are cheated when NFL coaches can’t translate that to the pro game.
“There has never been a more exciting player in football than Randle El when he was at Indiana”
If you believe that you have some severe issues.
Check out his highlight reel some time.
Then you check out Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson, Tony Dorsett, Larry Fitzgerald, and even Hugh Green on defense.
Now before you change the argument remember what you said above:
“There has never been a more exciting player in football than Randle El when he was at Indiana”
So the fact that I didn’t name a QB does not matter, you said PLAYER.
He was more exciting than all of them if you ask me.
“He was more exciting than all of them if you ask me.”
You’re nuts. Randel El was a gimmick on a losing team. Big deal.
We disagree.
You can’t disagree with facts John. Randle El’s college team was a loser. 30 years from now no one but you and his family will even remember his time at Indiana.
But they’ll be talking about the players I listed above.
This isn’t about facts. I consider Randle El more exciting than the players you mentioned. That’s an OPINION. Randle El touched the ball on every play. Quarterbacks do that. I didn’t know that much about him until someone sent me a 30 minute highlight reel of him before the draft. If I showed 100 people that tape and the highlight reels of the players you mentioned and asked them which one they’d like to see again, 60 of them would say El’s. That’s my OPINION.
I missed seeing the show, John. I was hoping to check out the 3 a.m. reairing, but there wasn’t a rebroadcast.
I hope the panel talked about what a terrible job Tomlin is doing handling this quarterback derby. I realize he’s faced with an unusual situation, but his QB rotation last night made absolutely no sense, beginning with even playing, let alone starting Roethlisberger.
Dixon was promised a chance with the first team, yet not many first-team receivers were even in the game. Then Leftwich, the probable Week 1 starter, gets pounded by playing with third and fourth-team players.
Very strange.
I’ll say this: Roethlisberger once again put together a pretty three-point drive, which is pretty much what he does on a regular basis. Too bad Leftwich couldn’t have played with the starters. This is going to be a long season…
That was our first topic. We all wondered why Roetlisberger started. I declared Batch their 2nd best QB, something that I’ve been suspicious of all summer. Dixon’s has Mt. Everest to climb before he can get close enough to sniff Kordell Stewart’s talent. I’ve also been saying for 6 months that this is not going to be a good year to be the Steelers QB.
There were plenty of bonehead plays all around, but my take on the QB,#10 Kord–I mean Dennis Dixon,is that he’s not and may never be ready to start in the NFL.He looked flustered, hurried some throws or did not set his feet before throws. If he gets any kind of pressure he tucks the ball immediately and looks to run.He doesn’t hang in the pocket and look downfield.Sure,he might get a 40 yard run.Nothing wrong with that.He may also turn a sack into a 5 yard gain but he might have an open receiver who would have picked up 25.
Dixon is their 4th best QB, Leftwich is 3rd. Dixon should strive to be half as good as Stewart. He ain’t there yet.
Batch may very well be their 2nd best QB but I have my doubts if he can survive 2 games, let alone 4.
I hear you, but you’re not any worse off if you start him and he last’s one series. He just might last 4 games.
…did u guys address the ageing DBs on the squad…william gay-desha townsend-ike taylor-ryan clark played the worst pass coverage i’ve ever seen in the last half of last years season..even with troy out thats horrific the way they played as a team…ike taylor jogging after receivers against the raiders last year@heinz field was pathetic…how can these guys regroup from such terrible play
