Despite my serious libertarian leanings, I could be talked into being in favor of a ban on fantasy football, but I know I’m in the minority on that one, too. (I’m wondering, do fantasy players wear game jerseys while they’re setting their lineups and pouring over the stats?)

John, you should actually be in favor of fantasy sports! It’s a statistics-driven, sports based competition between friends that requires active participation, strategy and a knowledge of what’s going on outside the cocoon of your teams exploits.
Which to me beats sitting on your butt playing video games.
Mock if you will, but try to win a league. See how you fare.

I don’t have a jersey, but I have a Championship Ring from the 2005 season…big ugly thing…my wife hates it…My dog won her league in 2008, but she didn’t get a ring…though we did use some winnings on treats and toys for her…
I used to make fun of and look down on people who played fantasy football. I thought of them as football geeks, nerds, guys who didn’t have a girlfriend or a life, etc etc.
A few years back my nephew asked me to join his league. I told him to go take a hike and that I wouldn’t waste my time on something stupid like that.. But he needed just one more team to fill out his league, so he constantly pestered and begged me to join. Finally I did just to shut him up and get him to quit pestering me about it.
Well I wasn’t even half way through the season and I got hooked like a junkie on crack.
Now I’m in at least 4 Fantasy football leagues a year. And it makes watching football even far more enjoyable than ever before. Now I can get more into other NFL games on tv than just Steeler games.
I’m telling you John, just get into a Yahoo fantasy league for just one season and you will be like me and completely change your thinking on it.
I tried it once long before it was called fantasy football. A bunch of guys I knew got together in the late ’70s and did what is now known as Fanatasy football. I had a team and it bored me to death.
Playing Fantasy Football on paper back in the 70′s compared to online Fantasy Football today is like the difference between driving a 1974 Pinto and a 2010 Corvette.

The fact that we have to watch a running tape of players stats across the TV screen during play makes it bad enough. The thought of rooting for any opposing player just doesn’t seem right. If the Steelers are no longer in contention than it doesn’t matter much. But when they are still in contention I root for them only. Plus I root against any division team and AFC team that could hurt our playoff standing. Oh and TO, Ocho-whatshisname and any other loud mouth-look at me type to break an ankle. Isn’t that enough to keep track of? If they would stop showing the stats throughout the game I still wouldn’t agree with it on general principle but at least I could ignore it.
Jim that is a great point. They continue to run the Fantasy stats at the bottom of the screen and the fantasy people ignore the playing of the game. Just show the stats periodically.
after yeatrs of playing, i agree with you john. it totally changes how you watch the game. Instead of being a true steelers’ fan you cheer for Derek mason to pick up that late garbage score. Or you watch a monday night game and focus on one guy. Fantasy is awful. Ruins how you “watch the game”.
I remember when watching the game used to be enough.
