According to Buster Olney of ESPN, there are serious discussions going on about realigning Major League Baseball.
This would be a really interesting story if Pittsburgh had a real Major League Baseball team.
Let me know when they have a serious discussion about instituting a salary cap.

I read David Maranis’ book on Clemente. It was tremendous and I highly recommend it but I couldn’t disagree with his email in the story you sposted. He said Clemente wasn’t totally accepted by Pittsburgh until after he died. That is just plain bullshit. I’ll post the story, Thanks for the heads up.
Speaking of baseball, isn’t it wonderful that it’s the middle of summer and the basketball & hockey seasons still aren’t over. Ridiculous!
Beyond ridiculous. The NHL should start in September and be over before May 1st. I don’t care when the NBA starts or finishes.
I wasted $250 on the NBA once….and I will never make that mistake again. My son was a Tracy McGrady fan so I took him to Cleveland when the Houston Rockets were in town. What a joke, ten guys jogging up and down the court for 43 minutes, no one ever got within 5 feet of anyone from the opposing team, guys would get under the basket and whichever way the ball came off the rim, thats who got the rebound. Finally with 5 minutes left they actually acted like they cared and played with some passion. Out $250 and had to go to Cleveland to give it away, that was a bad day!
I agree that it is crazy that the NHL is still playing games in June, However, it is hardly the “middle of summer.” Summer hasnt even started yet.
If we play the most important g playing games of a warm weather sport in November in 30 degrees, I guess it only makes sense to play the most important games of a warm weather sport in June, right? At least the temperature outside doesnt affect a hockey game.
The NHL needs to start playing every other day. Especially in the playoffs. And MLB needs to start playing scheduled doubleheaders on Sundays. Will never happen, though, because the MLBPA would never allow it and that is why they are the worst union in history.
The NHL should start Sept 10, play an 80 game schedule that ends in March and finish the playoffs at the end of April.
But there wouldnt be as much money tobe had. Isnt that what it is all about?? (extreme sarcasm, by the way…)
They should consider best of five series in the first two rounds. That would chop a week off the schedule.
And no two-day breaks between games dragging out the series.

So I guess MLB is interested in doing away with divisions AND rivalries that have existed for decades. That is pretty much what about happen if they eliminated divisions. They continue to tinker with the things that don’t really matter (all-star game) and ignore the one huge issue that would allow fans in places like Pittsburgh to actually give a damn more than a few years about of a quarter of a century (A salary cap).
MLB is a joke.
I would be all for the idea of realignment, but doing away with divisions is a joke. Teams should be playing in divisions with teams in the same time zone. I dont think I have seen the end of a Pirates away divisional game in 10 years.
Terrible idea in a screwed-up sport. So it probably has more of a chance to be enacted than some think.
They will cheapen the playoffs further by adding more teams.
At some point, they’re going to have to play doubleheaders again, or shorten the 162-game schedule.
