QUESTION FOR PITT AND PSU FANS

Pitt plays Utah tonight.

Penn State plays Youngstown State on Saturday.

Here’s my question for you if you’re a Pitt fan:

Which would you rather see, an exciting, high scoring double overtime loss to Utah tonight or a 56-3 win over Cupcake State at Heinz Field on Saturday?

If you’re a Penn State fan:

Would you rather see Penn State beat YSU 63-10 on Saturday or see an exciting, double overtime loss to Utah on the road?

Forget the stupid poll ramifications. I’m not interested in that nonsense.

I’m talking about you as a football fan. Would you rather see your team play in an exciting, evenly matched game and lose or watch it beat a hopelessly over matched opponent?

Call me crazy, but if I were a Pitt fan, I would much rather see a competitive loss to a real team than a blowout over a cupcake.

If the polls and the idiotic BCS system have made it so you’d rather see your team beat Youngstown 63-0 than see it lose to Utah 42-41 in double OT, that should be all the argument anybody needs for getting rid of them.

I’m really looking forward to watching Pitt tonight. The Steelers game will be on the DVR. If Pitt were playing Youngstown, I’d choose the Steelers pathetic fourth preseason game because I’d be expecting it to be more entertaining.

Give me the loss any time. It is just like I said during our softball season this season. I would rather lose a game 9-6 than to win a game 31-3.

I would certainly rather see Pitt play a good team and win than blow out a cupcake, but there’s no way I’d choose a loss; albeit a close one to any team over a win.

I’ve seen enough Pitt heartbreakers.

OK. I think it’s a shame that the option exists for a team to schedule a guaranteed win because it has created the mentality that it’s better to see Pitt beat a team it has no business playing than to see a really good football game that may end up in a loss.

If a team wants to be taken seriously, they cant be playing teams like YSU for an opener. Heck, thats the same team that Slippery Rock opened against when I was in school there.

Once upon a time, I was crazy about Penn State football. That was before the program started scheduling cupcakes on purpose just to pad Paterno’s win column.
It’s sad, I agree.
It’s pretty difficult to get excited about a season that starts with a blowout win against a cupcake that will do nothing to enhance the team’s ability to compete with the likes of Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan.
I find it fascinating, however, that you’ve picked this particular Week 1 to single out PSU. Like Pitt has never opened a season with a cupcake???

What’s fascinating about it, Penn State is playing YSU and Pitt’s playing Utah. If it were the other way around I would be saying the same thing and asking the same question.

It is far past the time to abolish this stupid BCS crap. Create a playoff system that can determine a true national champion. I would even be in favor of putting every conference champion in the tournament. If you can’t win your conference – your not in the playoff. Maybe that would get these teams/conferences to quit trying to build these mega/super conferences too.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve never understood why people feel a need to come up so many complicated formulas for a playoff. Win your conference, go to the playoffs. So many of the “solutions” still require teams to advance based on voting. If there’s a vote, it’s still a Mythical National Championship.

Can anyone tell me how a team gets ranked before even playing a game? Absurd. And who is Va. Tech paying off every year to be ranked around #10. It’s incredible, they lose 3-4 games every year, and the next season they start out in the Top 10. It’s like the voters want so bad for the ACC to be good, but it’s horrendous.

…definetly wanna see a close game over a blowout no doubt…problem is that stupid ass BCS bs THEY HAVE THAT MAKES ZERO SENSE…playoff system fpr college is a must…i believe obama sais he’s gonna address that issue when he got voted in…another lie among many…but back to college footballl…last year cincinnati was UNDEFEATED…they play in the same division as pittt…and they got zero shot to play in ther natinal chapionship game…hows that fair…if that was pitt who got snubbed you know western pa would criy for years…and deservedly so…look boys and girls…several teams get screwed out of the title game every year…its flawed the BCS system…

Rankings only matter if you are in the hunt to play in the Title Game or to get an at large BCS bid. Pitt is good but not national championship good. And no Big East team is getting an at large BCS bid.

Therefore, winning the Big East is all that should matter for Pitt, which will get them to a BCS bowl. As a result, I would prefer they play better teams which = better games. Whooping on YSU won’t help them win the Big East or put them in any better position for a BCS bowl then simply winning the Big East. Credit to Pitt for having a tough road opener.

Win or lose for these two, I don’t care. What is taking place in State College is theft. PSU is stealing the money of their fans by playing games like this. YSU is stealing money from their fans who pay to go watch them engage in what should be described as “sports prostitution”. They are selling themselves for money.

You’re right on John. I’ve been saying for years that the NCAA should abolish conferences, set regional divisions, and make each team’s schedule, rather than allowing schools to schedule 8 home games, 5 of which are against cupcakes. College football is by far my favorite sport to watch, but until it decides its champion on the field and stops rewarding teams who pad their schedules just to say “We went to x number of bowl games in a row,” (cough, Rutgers, cough), its postseason will remain among the worst.

I would much rather watch Pitt lose a competitive road game against a good team than beat a patsy. The idiots that vote should recognize the importance of a quality road loss. I’ve seen it often in the past where a team goes on the road, plays a competive game, loses and gets penalized in the polls for the loss. That makes no sense.

That is why I don’t follow college football games since far too many times you have one highly dominant team crush a weak “cupcake” like team. I’d rather the teams be more evenly matched and the games be more competitive. Blowouts like you mentioned just aren’t that exciting when they seem to happen far too much.

Sorry, ill take the 63-0 win every time….much more exciting to me to see Lewis, Baldwon and company run up stats even if it was against a high school team than to lose by 1 in triple OT. Maybe it’s because i am a fantasy foot ball nut and have grown up in the Madden Football age…but that’s how i feel

Well this was a prophetic post John. Good game. Utah is a very tough place to play and Pitt has a way to go to be a top 20 team in my opinion but they came back and got it to overtime so there is hope for the season.

Pitt is playing New Hampshire next week and Isiah Thomas U (FIU) a couple of weeks later…real powerhouses there. And I’m sure all Pitt fans will be applauding Tino Ravioli, or whatever his name is, as the 2nd coming of Tyler Palko when they beat up on them. How about instead of talking about scheduling — talk about the great recruiting/awful coaching of Dave Wanntedt?

Were the previous 17 teams that lost in Utah also victims of bad coaching? Last night was a good night for Pitt. They won’t be in a tougher situation all year. It’s a better team now than it was on Wednesday. Losing that game last night did Pitt a lot more good than beating Youngstown State 48-0 would have done.

This is not meant to defend playing YSU, but one thing that hasn’t been mentioned yet is that Penn State has named a TRUE FRESHMAN as their starting quarterback. This is something that never happens at PSU and is something to look forward to in the game regardless of the opponent. Seeing the first game of a potential 4 year starter and leader of your team is a big deal, especially at PSU. Sometimes there are other story lines in a game other than the name on the front of the jersey of your opponent.

Forgetting that a loss is the kiss of death for rankings then yes take an exciting loss. I was at Beaver Stadium for a what turned out to be a great game vs Purdue a few years ago. It was a tough loss but a great game for a struggling PSU program at the time. My guess is that Beaver Stadium is sold out tomorrow but not stuffed to the rafters. It never seems to be for these “pre-season” games. Next week PSU goes to ‘Bama for a prime time Saturday night game. Powerhouse New Hampshire comes to Heinz Field. Pitt played last night???

I’d like to see PSU vs PItt again but on a Saturday. College football should be on Saturdays only and end no more than one week after Thanksgiving. In most PSU fans minds the rivalry with Pitt is dead. The best that can be hoped for is an occasional home and home series every few years. Pitt-NH most likely will not be televised. Just about every PSU game is on and thanks to the Big Ten Network even the “tune-up” games get on TV.
