RAVENS HUMILIATE STEELERS

When Ben Roethlisberger is bad, he’s really bad. I guess you could say that about any quarterback but, because of his amazing ability to make something out of nothing and his willingness to try, when it’s not working for him, it means lots of ugly turnovers.

Joe Flacco should be feeling pretty good about himself tonight. You can be sure he heard all the talk about how he couldn’t beat Ben Roethlisberger.

He didn’t actually beat Roethlisberger on Sunday but he beat Dick LeBeau’s defense, which also looks really, really bad when it’s bad.

Going back to the Super Bowl, this is two games in a row that the Steelers defense has been smoked.

Troy Polamalu has a new, well deserved contract, but I keep getting the impression, based on the end of last season, the preseason and today in Baltimore, that he’s arriving about a half step too late.

It’s only the first game and it was on the road against one of the best teams in the conference, but, the Steelers’ defense looked old today and it was playing against an offensive line that was put together about a half an hour before game time.

Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday that he likes it when people talk about how old his defense is. He says it fuels them. Steelers fans had better hope that he’s still saying that a month from now.

Too bad we didn’t get to see SanAntonio Brown & Heinz Ward dancing in the end zone today. They are so good at it. BTW, I have heard that Heinz has been chosen as a finalist on this seasons “Drunk Driving With The Stars.”

Same problems as always:

Predictability on offense based on formation. If David Johnson is on the field? It’s a run play. What good is all this alleged speed at WR when we only see them on 2nd or 3rd down and pass? THey knew what was coming before they even ran the play on Mendenhall’s fumble.

The Ravens played an OL that’s barely played together, for LeBeau not to go after them early and often with blitzes was a joke. He still has no answer for Ray Rice coming out of the backfield either.

Hood, Heyward, and Worilds MUST start seeing some meaningful minutes. Aaron Smith looks finished, he needs to switch roles with Hood. LeBeau needs to be a coach first, and a friend to his trusted older players second.

Offense? Use rollouts, moving pockets, waggles, motion. All they did all day was allow Suggs and Ngata to tee off.

I’ve told you for years Ben and Bradshaw are the same player, when they play well, and when they play bad.

But unless they start using their speed on offense and quit being so predictable? The Steelers can still beat anyone, but they can also lose to anyone as well.

Based on what I saw today, I think you could have been harsher John. I don’t care what anyone says. This is a really bad team and they better fix up their problems before Sunday or they will be stunned at home against a bad Seattle team. Based on what I saw today, I think they very well could be stunned and then the season will go south. Pathetic performance. I have never seen a more pathetic Steelers performance in many years.

IMO blame on this one goes to all facets:offense, defense, special teams (fake extra point—-really?) and coaching. I cant really think of a player for the Steelers who stood out and deserveda “game ball”. I really dont understand it- none of Tomlin’s teams played this bad in an opening game (now under Cowher, this would have been the norm-an opening day loss/blowout). Was this just an anomoly or a hint of things to come? I am not ready to write off the season, but I am concerned that a good bit of issues from last year (o-line, secondary) were not addressed/kept as status quo and they, as of game 1 of the 2011 season, are still a problem.

Holy crap did that Stiller D look slow….and old. Did Troy play?

The Ravens D looked more like the Stillers D than the Stillers D. It’s just one game, but I have to wonder if the better (passing) teams have figured out LeBeau’s schemes. There is a clear gameplan for any team with an above-average QB to carve up the Steeler D.

That was an was uncharacteristic performance for Roethlisberger. To his credit, that was his first three-pick game since 2008. What was characteristic, however, was Roethlisberger’s inability to get his offense into the end zone. Did anyone happen to watch Rodgers and Brees on Thursday night?
Should this be the season in which the Steelers’ defense becomes old, slow and below average, Roethlisberger’s “winning” image just might take a big hit…
The Roethlisberger Apologists/Obsessives were out in full force Sunday night. Pompeani, Alexander, Giannoti and Bendel attempted to calm Steelers Nation on “The Showdown,” each in full agreement that Flacco’s long-awaited “first win over Roethlisberger” really doesn’t count since it hadn’t occured in the postseason. Probably took them all day to come up with that one.
But thank God for technicalities.
I was worried there for a second.
By the way: Has Tarvaras Jackson ever beaten The Unbeatable Big Ben?

Let’s not talk about apologists, this defense gets a free pass whenever a top QB lights them up.

My favorite double standard about this team is when the beloved defense gets ripped it’s “Well [insert good QB name here] does that to everybody”

But when a good defense has a good game (In this case a good HALF) against Ben and his offense? It’s “Ben got married” or “Ben doesn’t prepare” or “Ben needs to watch film”.

In short? Why does the defense (Which this front office has invested most of their money into) continue to get a free pass while the QB and his offense (Which has been treated more of as an afterthought by the same front office) does not?

Crash: The Rooneys, to their credit, have gone above and beyond to keep one of the top defenses in the league intact, which is something they didn’t do in the 1990s, when quality players came and mostly went.
There is no free pass.
The 2011 defense has petered out.
It’s now up to the quarterback and his offense to score touchdowns instead of field goals. That shouldn’t be asking too much.
Ben got married?

No wonder he looks as old and as slow as the defense.

And yet they still can’t stop Tom Brady and were one of the worst 4th quarter defenses in the NFL for 4 years with their inability to close out games.

The quarterback and his offense can’t score TDs when people are more concerned with running the football than winning games.

No Bobzilla, what I am, is right.

After 9 games with Ben last season the Steelers had 24 first down plays in the redzone:

19 runs, 5 passes.

That’s what you call predictability. If I know this? The opponent knows this.

The 2007 Steelers defense (In a year Ben Roethlisberger threw for 32 TDs and the Steelers also had the NFL’s leading rusher after 14 games) failed to hold 4th quarter leads vs. the Jets, vs. the Jaguars II, and failed to force the Denver game into OT after the offense scored a tying touchdown. They gave up another TD in Jags I right after the offense tied the score in the 4th. “Give back” points after the Steelers score has been a thorn in this defense’s side for YEARS!

2008? They blew 4th quarter leads against the Chargers, Jags, Cardinals (They also gave another “give back” score in XLIII after the Steelers scored their first TD of the game to take a 10-0 lead after two offensive possessions), and Ravens I. Only to see the offense rescue them.

To show that I’m also not biased like you I did not blame the defense after James Harrison’s snap almost went in the river and then the defense gave up a 4th quarter TD after that safety the next time they went on the field. I also did not blame them when the Colts scored a 4th quarter game winning TD on a short field also.

I’m objective in my opinions. You know two things: Ben bashing and wishing it was 1975.

2009? The defense blew 4th quarter leads at Cincy (Playing it your way, running and defense), Chicago, at Kansas City, two different leads vs Oakland, and one in Baltimore (with no evil Ben playing).

They make ONE STOP, in ONE of those FIVE GAMES, they make the playoffs.

The Raiders game was especially painful because the defense gave up 21 points in the 4th quarter to one of the NFL’s WORST OFFENSIVE TEAMS EVER WHO BROUGHT IN THEIR BACKUP QUARTERBACK!

Leftwich is gone. He’s done as a Steelers player. He won’t be back.

Accept that (Like when I told you last year that his injuries are why no one wants him as a full time starter anymore) and move on.

I’ll watch the games and deal with the facts.

You can keep wishing for Leftwich while keeping your head stuck in the sand.

Please get off the Leftwich kick. Since discovering that the Steelers can win even with fourth-string Charlie, I haven’t given Leftwich much thought lately. Remember last season? The Steelers played the toughest part of their schedule (13-3 Atlanta, 10-6 Tampa and 12-4 Baltimore) without your hero, and somehow they managed to do just fine.
Your “giveback” banterings are boring.
You need some new material.
Against the Raiders in ’09, the offense did NOTHING for three quarters, which is pretty much what it always does. Someone should tell Roethlisberger and Ariens that’s OK to score early and often.

Just like Sunday, the season was 3 plays old, the offense was down 7 points before they even saw the field.

Yeah, their defense played well for 2 games. The offense played well in one game, and the defense blew a 4th quarter lead against the Ravens and lost.

You are embarrassing yourself.
I’m going to try to explain this to you one more time: There would be no worries of blown leads by the defense if the offense put other teams away. There would be no need for fourth-quarter comebacks by the offense if the offense played with passion and urgency throughout entire games.
The NFL has become the The Outdoor Arena League. In Monday Night’s game, Tom Brady’s artistry negated his defense’s horrible performance, one that allowed Chad Henne, of all people, to throw for more than 400 yards. Chad Effin’ Henne!!!
It’s time for elitist Ben to start carry his team, the way Brady and Brees do theirs. Since football is a TEAM sport, quarterbacks should not be judged on wins and loses. They should be measured by how often they get their offenses into the end zone. It’s just that simple.
And please stop quotting me. I know what I’ve said.

The defense didn’t turn the ball over 7 times. You are not beating anybody let alone a playoff team with a -7 turnover differential.

It was a very bad game all around. The only player on defense whose age is an issue is Farrior. Ray Lewis didn’t look old did he?

Ben had ONE turnover after a half and one play:

They were down 21 points. Most of his turnovers happened after the game was already over.

What’s REAL concerning about this team is not just their age, it’s the fact that they really don’t have much as far as drafted depth for the future.

It’s only 2011 but the 2006, 2008, and 2009 draft classes are already washouts.

When some of these older guys are off the books in the next two years? I think the Steelers are FINALLY going to have to start dipping into free agency for some legitimate (and costly), quality talent.

Crash: It’s next to impossible to conduct a rational and reasonable debate with someone who thinks, says and writes that a No. 1-ranked defense stinks but a No. 12-ranked offense is the greatest of all-time.
Everytime you’re backed into a corner, you have to mention quarterbacks (Brees) who haven’t been protected and carried by their defenses much of their careers. That kind of logic shows your immaturity and your lack of objectivety.

The defense doesn’t stink. It’s does stink in the 4th quarter.

Why? Because LeBeau wants to swap short gains for time. And a lot of the time it backfires on him.

It almost cost them SB XLIII. It DID cost LeBeau Super Bowl XXIII with the Bengals when his 4th quarter prevent defense allowed Joe Montana to carve up his secondary after doing nothing for three quarters.

Please allow me to explain Super 43 to you: The Steelers’ defense was assigned to contain one of the best offenses in the league. The Steelers’ offense was assigned to score against the absolute worst defensive team in Super Bowl history. Without thinking too hard, which Steelers’ unit do you suppose had the toughest and most challenging assignment?
The Steelers’ offense struggled against that god-awful Arizona defense for three-plus quarters, scoring only THIRTEEN points. Meanwhile, the Steelers’ defense not only scored a touchdown, but it also gave the Steelers’ offense ample time to put the Cardinals away, which it did not, could not do.
Back in the ’70s, it was the Steelers’ offense that put teams away in Super Bowls, not the famous Steel Curtain Defense.

Yeah. He actual made a big stop on 3rd down. I think it was the one where Ike took the idiotic personal foul penalty to prolong the dirve, but I am not sure. Keisel is a 3-4 DE he is not going to make a ton of plays.

2 things about the reaction to the game. If I did not see the game and you told be the Ravens turned the ball over 7 times, I would expect the score to be a lot worse than 35-7. The other thing is if the Steelers won it would have been ho-hum we are 1-0 let’s get ready for the next 15 games of the season. The Ravens are acting like they won the SUper Bowl, Joe Flacco is all of a sudden Jonhhy U.

the simplest terms, what you saw yesterday was a franchise committed to getting better in the offseason and wanting to improve play a franchise who’s attitude is ‘we’re good enough and just had some bad breaks in the superbowl’.

It was obvious the ravens addressed all their personnel issues and watched a lot of film in the off season. Did it look like the steelers did? In more detail now

Ryan Clarke can’t play. Hasn’t been able to do much for two years now. Never, Never gets his hands on the ball, let alone a meaningful pick. Now even looks bad in run support.

Troy may rebound, but he looks slower and continues to guess wrong over and over again.

D line is too old, start working in the youth.

I could not understand the investment in Timmons. Looks like tarzan plays like jane. Flies around but never makes the play.

Offensive line is awful. This is the most successful franchise in league history, with all this money to throw around with restructured contracts and doug legursky is the best we can do at RG? Really?

Where was all this receiver talent yesterday? Anybody open? The picks that reed had he was hanging in centerfield way late in the play. Apparently he had a lot of faith in the other coverage, rightfully so.

How about letting the heir apparent on the Defensive coaching staff start calling plays as part of his education. People have had Lebeau solved for some time now. You can’t have 70 year old guys calling plays at this level, they are not risk takers and are too set in their ways to change. Ask Penn State how that’s working out.

I’ll reserve my overreaction for later. The typical yinzer drives me insane. They complain during super bowl victory years. This is one game – get over it.

One moron called the dumb-down after the game (luckily this was the only 30 seconds of it I happened to see) and complained about the officiating! After that ass-beating! LOL

People are even defending the defense. EVERYONE played like crap. Who was giving up the huge gashes to rice? was that the offense? again…morons…

Man, I love football, but wow are the fans tough to take.

No one has been or should be defending the defense. The defense has hit The Wall, which is what happened to the ’70′s defense in 1980 and ’81. Too old, too slow and too complacent. The party’s over for an offense that’s been well protected and carried most of the past eight seasons. It’s time for the offense to pick up the slack.
Did you see Rodgers and Brees on Thursday night? They and their offenses carried their suspect defenses, which is what “elite” quarterbacks and high-powered offenses are paid to do…
I realize that it’s just one game, but the Steelers inability to stop the run, coupled with a porous pass defense, spells trouble. Did you see Hightower of the Redskins tramble the Steelers’ run defense in the preseason?
Hightower, combined with Ray Rice on Sunday, should be enough to cause at least a little concern. The days of the Steelers winning 13-10 seem to be over. Roethlisberger and Arians, heaven forbid, might just have to stop with the playground tactics, watch some actual film and start game-planning.
If only the Steelers can off to a 2-2 start… Oh, wait. That was last season. Never mind.

Hey Rat: Roethlisberger’s scoring offense ranked 12th by season’s end, which was an improvement from the No. 17 ranking it held much of the 2010 season. In the four games before Roethlisberger pulled himself off the couch to rejoin the team, the Steelers’ scoring offense ranked No. 10.
The Steelers’ passing offense in 2010 ranked No. 14, which no doubt became inflated from having Oakland, Cleveland and Carolina on the schedule. Of course, we shouldn’t forget all those meaningless, garbage yards that were accumataled in that blowout loss to New England.
Here’s 2010 stat for ya: Steelers 23, Bengals 7. Zero offensive TDs by the Steelers. Even in the first game against Cincinnati, the game-winning TD pass WASN’T thrown by Roethliberger in a 27-21 Steelers victory.
The Steelers’ offense was held to under 20 points in eight of 16 regular-season games last season.
Couldn’t care less about Rodgers’ numbers.
I don’t live in Wisconsin.

I don’t believe you can make a proper assessment until atleast week 4. It was scary to see the defense get pushed around for four quarters mostly because we haven’t seen it that much in the past 10 years.
But offensively, laying an egg has become a trend. I really don’t think Arians game plans for anyone, and he’s clueless in situational football.
Unfortunately, The NFL doesn’t want defense to be played anymore so Pittsburgh is going to have to win big games with offense.
Until they show that they can it’ll be a real struggle against the supreme offenses in the league.
I also don’t think it’s fair to bash the secondary Sunday either. Baltimore was matching Backs and Tight Ends on Steelers’ Linebackers. In prior meetings with Baltimore those match-ups have been a push. When you factor in the heat, lack of conditoning, and total time in pads you have the result you got Sunday.

I think Ben is a great QB. But let’s face it. Since that GB regular season shootout , Ben has had great MOMENTS in games, but he hasn’t had many GREAT GAMES where he was on target for all four quarters. When you are an elite QB, you got to have more great GAMES, not just great moments in games where the defense is able to keep the game close until the 4th Q and then let you have your clutch moment. What if your defense is not shutdown like in the SB or today? You got to be able to direct an offense that is able to put up more than 20 points without giving up a turnover. How many games qualify that since the SB reg season game? Arians was on record saying they could put up more points, but they choose to kill the clock. Seriously?? Why didn’t they do that yesterday because points were needed. They put up points in the SB but at the expense of 3 costly turnovers.

There is no magic here. Dick LeBeau is very good, but he is not as great as hyped these days and he is not great enough to convert turds in the secondary to gold. Same with Kugler and the OL. Balts OL didnt have an OL coach for the game and they played better .

One game in, and already the Stillers D is finished? LOL

There are some legit concerns (secondary, Harrison’s health, Smith and Big Snack’s effectiveness)…. but to think they’re finished and they need Ben and Aryans to replicate the “greatest show on turf” offense?

Beam me up Scotty. There is no signs of intelligent life down here in Yinzerville.

The three highest paid players on offense AFTER Ben:

Aging over the hill Hines Ward.

Glorified extra blocker Heath Miller.

Maurkice Pouncey.

Wow, run for cover…The sky is falling..lol. This game was like the super bowl for the Ravens, just the first game for the Steelers. Had thye Ravens lost, it was disaster, for the Steelers, it’s one loss in a 16 game season. Relax folks. There’s a loooong way to go.

Everybody knows there’s a long way to go but there have been signs starting with the end of last season, including the Super Bowl and also the preseason that the Steelers defense is starting to show it’s age, They have 15 games to change that impression and could very well do it, but, at some point these guys are going to show their age.

I don’t know if it’s age to be honest with you. Isn’t the defense old in minutes 1-45 also? They play pretty well don’t they?

The scheme changes in the 4th quarter. LeBeauPa pulls them back, they don’t blitz, and they try and swap short gains for time.

What kills that, is that teams have still scored on them, while milking the clock.

They do the same thing at the end of first halves also.

When LeBeauPa goes? I don’t want Butler replacing him either. He’ll just be LeBeauPa Lite.

They need a new, fresh approach on defense, now that the old guys are going to be getting replaced in the next two years.
