JUST WATCH THE GAME

My friend Joe Starkey wrote a column today that celebrates his discovering the joys of tweeting while watching a game.

Joe was really happy that he was able to communicate with other tweeters while he was watching the Pirates 19 inning game Tuesday night.

I also watched the last 10 innings of the game.

In bed.

It was about 10 times the number of innings I have watched at any one time in the last six or seven years.

(I’m doing a talk show now and the Pirates’ contending makes it impossible for me to do what I would rather do –ignore them.)

I wrote a book called Just Watch The Game, so it shouldn’t surprise you when I say that I don’t understand the need for tweeting while watching.

It never occurred to me that I would enjoy the game more by reading tweets from total strangers between every pitch.

I realize I’m old, but that’s beyond pathetic.

ATTENTION ST. BERNARD’S ALUMNI

I’m in the process of writing my second book. It will be available in November and I am doing a chapter on the St. Bernard’s Grade School football dynasty of the 50s and 60s.

If you played or coached there during that time I would like to hear from you.

Please contact me by sending a comment with your return email etc.

One of our regular posters, who goes by the name of Naper, played there in the 50s.

I had contact information for you, Naper and I’ve misplaced it. Please send it to me again.

FYI, the chapter is not just about the team that lost one game in 12 or 13 years. It’s about how times have changed since then and how it could never happen now.

A team comprised of 12 and 13 year old boys wouldn’t be allowed to be that good because of the “everybody has to play” mentality and the fear of damaging their opponent’s self-esteem.

I’ve already heard some great stories and I’m looking for more.

Father Lonergan, the pastor during that time, was the local version of the Pope.

He loved having an undefeated team and didn’t apologize for dominating local grade school football and he encouraged all boys to go out for the St. Bernard’s team.

At one time, they had over 100 players.

He believed his job was to turn boys into men and he thought the best way to do that was to encourage them to play football

This is what he wrote in the Sunday bulletin on March 8, 1955:

“The Scout fanatics wonder how we can be so cantankerous as not to become enthusiastic over the Boy Scouts. We like a boy who is all boy. If he is not a boy when he ought to be a boy, he will not be a man when he ought to be a man.

The Boy Scout is about 20 percent girl. That makes him a little gentleman. But a gentleman is a generic man. He must be a man before he can be a gentleman.

The Boy Scout program, even at its best, does not appeal to the boy who is all boy. A boy who is 20 percent girl may be gentle, but he is a hybrid. We like a thoroughbred.”

How do you think that would fly in 2011?

I’m looking forward to writing the chapter. I have a ton of great material but I need some first hand accounts.

Your help would be appreciated.

WELCOME TO THE NEW JUST WATCH THE GAME

You may have noticed some strange things in the past few days. Ads, links and modules may or may not have been appearing and disappearing every time you visit the website.  Do not adjust your computer. These strange occurrences are all part of the upgrades that we are working on to improve the look, feel and content of the site.

The first step is improving the usability of the site. You may notice “social media” buttons at the bottom of each post. Please don’t hesitate to try them out. Often.

The first one  Twitter, click on it to tweet any of John’s columns. It will automatically link it directly to your Twitter account.

The Second button should be obvious. Click it to post an article directly to your Facebook Wall.

The Third is Reddit a user generated news site. If you like an article, be sure to up vote it, the more votes the more exposure for Just Watch the Game.

Finally is a link to Digg a user generated news site.

Currently we are in the experimental phase and are looking for your feedback for all the new features. If you like using stumble upon or delicious or any other social bookmarking site let us know.

Pull no punches; tell us what works and what doesn’t. Feel free to leave a comment or e-mail us directly.
