JOHN STEINBECK WAS (IS) FULL OF SHIT

The 50th anniversary of John Steinbeck’s “Travels with Charley” is coming up in a few months.

Last Summer, my brother Bill set out to do a book about Steinbeck’s trip across the country 50 years ago.

His plan was to contrast and compare what Steinbeck saw with what’s happening in all of those places today.

He was shocked to find out that Steinbeck was a fraud.

He wrote what has always been considered the classic American travelogue, but Bill found out that it was another work of fiction:

“Travels With Charley in Search of America” is not just full of fiction and wooden characters straight out of Central Casting. It’s also a dishonest account of how Steinbeck actually traveled and what he really thought about the America of 1960.  To put it bluntly, as a work of nonfiction, “TWC” is a 50-year-old literary fraud.”

Bill’s take was not well received everywhere in academia. Steinbeck is a liberal icon and even when presented with obvious examples of his subterfuge, they defended him.

WHERE’S BILL?

We’ve been checking in on my brother Bill’s trip for the past few weeks. He’s following the route that John Steinbeck took exactly 50 years ago on his way to writing the American classic, “Travels With Charley.”

When we heard from him last, he was in a Montana bar hanging with a movie star.

He made it to the coast.
