I’m always in favor of people doing whatever they can to avoid paying taxes.
We’re taxed too much and what’s really annoying is that we’re taxed by people who don’t pay their taxes.
There are people working in the White House every day who owe thousands in back taxes.
How could anybody not be in favor of reducing the ability of these weasels to effect our lives?

Hey I love taxes, but that’s enough to make me steam.
I know the gov’t is inept, and I’m as disappointed as anyone in how Obama not only is not changing the “same old politics as usual” of Washington, but in some instances, making it worse.
We on the left want him to hold true to his campaign promises, cut down on crap like this story, and actually hold politicians feet to the fire.
Instead we get this, and he’s pissing off both sides. And what’s worse, he’s making our side look foolish, and just plain wrong, when if he’d stuck to the ideals he was elected on, progressive ideals, we’d be a lot better right now.
Public option to promote competition. Screw Wall Street, even if it means it’s bad for the economy. How bad would the economy have been had they not had the 2 bailouts which is what the far right wanted? Back those wishing for same sex marriage. Stop appeasing the right, and still not getting anything done.
Sorry for the rant. A little venting helps now and again.
You “love taxes?” That’s sad.
I think what he means is that he loves to see other people pay taxes. Otherwise, he’d send all his extra money to the government, and I would place a big wager on the fact that that’s not happening.

The Republican establisment won’t allow that. Shows they aren’t oppose to spending other people’s money. They only oppose Obama doing so. They belong on that Mt. Rushmore of hypocrites.
The Repubs will get another chance beginning in January. Let’s see if they learned. I’m not counting on it.

More reason for lower taxes and NO income tax. That Huff Post piece was written in 2008. I wonder if the writer, Paul Hogarth has written about the latest revelations.
Yeah, isn’t it interesting that John only posts a story that illustrates the democrats who owe taxes?
Both parties are rubbish but it’s fairly obvious that the biggest hypocrites in politics are those in the GOP.

My favorite line is “And 41 employees at the Executive Office of the President owed $831,000 altogether – about the same amount as during the last year of George W. Bush’s administration.” Nothing like fair and balanced coverage from John and Fox News.
The Repiblicans aren’t in power now. The story was about the CURRENT White House staff. The media should have done the story five years ago. The point is that the people who make the tax laws seem to have trouble paying their taxes. And the Democrats are the ones who are constantly saying we’re not taxed ENOUGH. That’s why Democrats not paying their taxes is more interesting because it’s more hypocritical.
It seems many who favor high taxes seem to do everything they can to avoid paying taxes.like I always say,the easiest thing to do in the world is spend someone else’s money.
Only the little people pay taxes. Which is what we are in Obama’s eyes.
This really isn’t a big deal because we don’t know the context it is in. Just today the IRS discovered that nearly a million people owe back taxes because of errors with the home tax credit. As for Obama, I don’t really think it is his job to make sure the white house janitor paid his taxes. Let the IRS deal with it. I’m sure most of these are legit or else the IRS will get them. Just ask Pete Rose.
The secretary of the friggin’ treasury tried to weasel out of paying his taxes. So did the chairlman of the ways and means committee. Not sure about the janitor.
Ah, Walt….the millions owed were a result of fraud which I believe is very different than errors.

John, I do not understand the thinking of such a large segment of our society. Why should I expect the rich to pay a higher percentage of taxes than the poor? I absolutely hate the idea that public funds are used to pay for stadiums. The poor should not have to subsidize the rich. On the other hand, the rich should not subsidize the poor. Some kind of a working flat tax would be fair. Why the poor or lower middle class think that the rich owe them is beyond me. I have never made a lot of money, but I do not think that those who have done so in an honest way should pay for my comfort. Of course, no income tax is the right way, it is just never going to happen.

The top 1% have 98% of the wealth. And a lot don’t pay. A local non profit made $587 million last ear and paid no tax. Sales tax you want the kid working his way to college@ McDonalds to pay the same % as a CEO.? They rich won’t pay the tax on their BMW ., they’ll find a way around by importing it., etc…… You just want to make the rich richer., and pay the unfortunate even less.
Check out fairtax.org. If everybody understood the sales tax plan and it was put to a referendum, it would win bu a landslide. There are rebates on the first 20,000 in sales tax which protect low income earners and no loopholes. You buy a 10 million dollar yachy–you pay the tax. No SS tax. No Medicare Tax.
John – you can’t win this one with the left because a national flat sales tax destroys the class warfare argument. They can’t scream about the rich controlling 98% of the wealth (though we’re not taxed on “wealth” as it is now – it’s INCOME, which is a different concept) if the rich are paying the sales tax on everything they buy. They can’t demagogue those who take the risks and provide the jobs and pay for the services because, lo and behold, they’re paying! They need the evil, greedy, rich people sneer at in order to promote the idea of getting more and more people dependent on the government.
Personally, I think a consumption tax is the way to go, but the problem is that it becomes harder to legislate morality (i.e., charitable tax deductions, home buyer credits, etc.), which both sides love to do. Because both left and right tend to like using the income tax code to persuade people to behave a certain way, it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to remove it and put in place an equitable, simple system. Not to mention the bloated IRS bureaucracy that will fight tooth and nail to stay in place.
What do you think the stock market would do if a 6 month tax holiday started tomorrow?
Federalist, I just went to the Fairtax.org site and tried out their calculator. They let you pay your entire mortgage payment with pre-tax dollars. So even under this Fairtax people are still trying to legislate morality.
That’s probably because people are so conditioned to the mortgage deduction idea. Imagine that. The government “letting” us pay for our mortgage with pre-tax dollars.
I thought you said NO LOOPHOLES. And it is called the FAIRTAX. How is it fair that a rent payment is presumably taxed while a mortgage payment isn’t?
How is rent taxed? You mean tax deductible? If there is no income tax there are no deductions. There are no loopholes.

Sales tax is not withheld on mortgage payments. No mention of a rent payment being exempt from from the 23% rate.

I’d like to read the fine print on that “no loophole” part you mention., just to double check. If everyone over 300K., corps., non profs etc …, pd their fair share. , the rest of us may pay nothing.
If we extend Bush tax cuts on for the rich it’s gonna cost us billions. They’re skating.
So, your solution for the fact that not enough money is being spent is to take money away from the people who spend the most money?
How is it a “fair share” if “the rest of us may pay nothing?” We are cresting over the hill of becoming a society where the majority is supported by a small taxpaying minority. When that happens, the downfall of our way of life will begin. It’s bad enough that the top 10% of earners pay 90% of the taxes in this country to begin with.
To continue any Bush economic policy is the definition of insane. Let us not forget what got us here. Sure there is govt waste., I just think the corporate welfare more egregious. Common sense tells me end the tax breaks for million and billionaires., it didn’t work., give or keep the breaks for middle class and small business owners.
The infrastructure ” does” need rebuilt. Remember some 100 years ago when we built them across major cities the first time ? Result ? The USA became the strongest economic nation in the world.
The unemployment rate was the same for Bush and Clinton. The economic collapse wasn’t caused by tax cuts. They were responsible for jump starting the economy after 9/11. The real estate bubble caused the meltdown and that was a direct result of government stupidity—forcing banks to lend money to people who had no way of paying it back.
