THE KID GOES DOWNTOWN
A hockey player hitting a batting practice home run is one thing, but Sidney Crosby almost hit one completely out of PNC Park.
Ridiculous.

Sid the Kid is none too shabby with a bat. But did you ever see Felipe Montemayor in goalie pads? Ay, Caramba!
Nothing this guy does surprises me anymore. Should we expect anything less?
He has a nice swing. I wonder how he’d do against live pitching. With his hand-eye coordination, it wouldn’t surprise me if he could really hit.
That’s mighty impressive. I wonder if any Steeler could do that ? I think Hines, Randle El, and Mewelde were drafted in baseball but I doubt any could hit a ball that far. This kid is amazing.!
A different planet.
You just gotta love this guy. What can’t he do? More important to me, as a dad of 3 kiddos under the age of 10, he’s someone I can point to as a sports dude who is doing things right. I don’t really portray him as role model for them (that’s what soldiers, vets, cops, and hopefully dad and mom and grandpa and are for), but he is (so far) a wonderful example of someone who understands where he came from, and is committed to doing what is right regardless of his fame. He could, potentially, go down in Burgh history as the most beloved local sports dude ever. In my mind, and yes it’s still early, he could top the likes of Mario, Lynn, Maz, Mel, Rocky, Roberto, yadda, you name it……as local sports heroes who played the game hard and then came out as solid citizens.
Perhaps I am over-reaching a little (with a 4-year old on my lap who can’t sleep) b/c my good friend and next-door neighbor was picked to have a Pens player deliver his season tix in person tomorrow PM. Yes, I got the coveted invite from said neighbor, and can’t wait to see which Pen shows up. I have the kids, the Sharpie, the camera, and the jerseys, ready to go. The Pens just seem to do everything right from a PR perspective. It’s a wonderfully classy organization, and the Bucs, and yes the Stillers, could take notes.
But if Ben showed up at my door with my season tickets up in 509, I think I would say I was “on the pot.” After all, my family has tossed all of our Big Ben jerseys. Speaking of which, how in the crap does my fam root for the Stillers when we don’t respect or care about the QB?? Seriously, how does that work?
Good nite. Hopefully. She is starting to look verrrry tired….
Great stuff.
Do you really have to respect or care for a player? To most of us they are anonymous people. All of them have skeletons in their closets. It’s just that some have been more newsworthy. If you are a home town fan you root for the team. The last thing you should be doing is attaching your emotions to an individual player. Trust me, if Dixon totally screws up the first 4 games, you will be calling Ben’s name!!
the pirates could use him
You know what I liked best about the clip? Its the self-effacing style in which Sid took the feat. Ah, I’m a lefty, I got a little help, its shorter.
I live in D.C. now and its funny how they pay homage to a great hockey player, but one with, how to nicely put it, a more self-aggrandizing style.
Gimme the kid any day.
Impressive in a way but who hasn’t hit a home-run off of Pirate pitching? (just kidding)
Sign him up!
He’s a saint.
hey john… give me you top 10 NHL players of all time… i’d be interested to see where mario ranks and does sid make it?
Lemieux is the best player I’ve ever seen in a team sport-any time any where. Gretzky has the numbers because of Lemieux’s health and the bad teams he had to play on, but I think he was the most TALENTED player I’ve ever seen. I didn’t see much of Bobby Orr, but I know a case can be made for him being the best ever. Gordie Howe has to be in there, although I didn’t see him much in his prime, either. Same goes for Bobby Hull and Rocket Richard, but then we get into comparing eras. I think Mark Messier has to be in there. (Jagr was as talented but too much of a head case.) Patrick Roy has to be in there. That’s 8. Just for laughs I’ll put Crosby nine and Ovechkin 10.
That’s a pretty good list, John.
In my opinion (i know nobody asked!!!!)….and discussion of the best hockey players of all-time comes down to this.
1) Bobby Orr….the best all-around hockey talent ever.
2A) Lemieux…the most naturally talented hockey player ever.
2B) Gretzky….the smartest and most driven hockey player ever.
Perfectly legitimate argument.
John.
u want to know what is ridiculous ??? Pens ticket prices…sad day today for me…1st time in my life i can honestly say I can’t afford Pens tickets…Lower level corners 145 plus 9 surcharge…154 bucks…insane…
had season tickets in d level for yrs before moving in 2005..now I live back here and was appalled at the prices.. so the Pens have joined the Steelers(whose ticket prices aren’t bad compared to the Pens) of outpricing a middle class family..I thought a new salary cap was designed to keep ticket prices down.
i am not whining here, they can charge that based on supply and demand but my days of 20 Pens games a yr have come crashing to an end and it saddens me because there is nothing better than a live NHL game
I’m amazed at what people are willing to pay for tickets. I got in free for 35 years.
Sid could probably suit up for the Steelers somewhere this Sunday and not embarasss himself. Agree w Gary also on how humble he was about it afterwards., total class. The kid just has “the gift”. He’s one of those athletes who may pass through town once about every 25 yrs.
I’m thinking strong safety.
Hell, iam thinking he could play Q.B. Honestly, Sid is just awesome, and the way he handles himself on news interviews and everything else he dones is just great.
I’m thinking the Steelers already have a pretty good one of those.
You think? Really? I was serious. I was suggesting that Crosby could replace Polamalu at strong safety tomorrow.
What a swing from Sid.He’s a regular Ted Savage,Carlos Bernier,Paul Pettit,Roman Mejias,Eddie O’Brien,R.C.Stevens,and Rex Johnston rolled into one.Sign him up.
Rex Johnston……only guy to play for the Pirates and the Steelers.
Vince Lascheid……… The only guy to play for the Pirates and Penguins.
Sold me my first tape recorder when I was about 12.
Does this mean Sid is going to be traded for prospects soon?
He’d be a huge hit in Canada…..maybe the Penguins could get Jose Bautista from the Blue Jays and give him to the Pirates.
Call me cynical but part of me thinks Bautista has to be on steriods to hit 45 home runs in a season. Or the Pirates are just that stupid. Actually either is equally plausible.
Both.
