Pitt is nailing recruits.
This year needs to be a big year for Pitt, i.e. Big East title.
Even then, the administration, I’m sure, will NEVER fire Wannstedt. So if there is anybody calling for his head, forget it. Wanny is here until he decides he doesn’t want to be anymore.
Wanny’s a great recruiter, can’t coach a lick.
Let’s see how he does now that he has a lot of talent.
He’s always had talent. He’s been a solid recruiter since day one minus the QB position.
He also inherited a solid team and because he tried to turn it into smashmouth like idiots wanted they lost more games than they should have his first two seasons.
If Walt Harris would have lost a 31-10 lead in a championship game he would have been flogged.
But got a free pass.
Dave Wannstedt did not inherit a solid team. He inherited a team that went 8-4 and got spanked by Utah in the Fiesta Bowl. They had decent players at the skill positions, as they always did under Harris, but they had a horrible defense and no running game.
Dave Wannstedt has put together a staff that can not only recruit but has the ability to coach and prepare players for the games. Pitt has a tough opener away at Utah. Pitt will run the football with Dion Lewis and their O-Line needs to gel quickly. The O-Line can with Coach Tony Wyse at the helm.
Maybe you can clarify a little bit Mr. Butler, but it seems to me that the word getting around to recruits is, if you want to go pro, go to Pitt. That has to be the reason they get these recruits.
Your point has merit. I think the Pitt coaches are working very hard and diligently and they are out recruiting other programs. Right now Pitt is producing Pro Prospects. When you review the teams that are continually in the top 10, those programs have numerous draft picks each yeat. 2010 draft, Florida led the NCAA with 9 draft picks, the year before Southern Cal had 11. There is a correlation between producing pro prospects and high recruting interests.
I’m still so thankful that the Rooneys hired Cowher and not Wannstedt in 1992. I often wonder how close it was. Probably better off not knowing.
In the four years prior to be fired in Miami, Wannstedt had a better record than Cowher playing in a tougher division.
Wannstedt was fired?
Gee, I don”t recall Cowher ever getting fired.
Maybe that’s the difference between the two.
As for that awful division Cowher coached in, was that the same easy, soft, cheesy division in which Kordell Stewart was able to prolong his career?
Sorry, but you can’t have both ways.
Cowher should have been fired in 2000. And, yeah, that was the division that Stewart and I’m pretty sure everybody else on the team played in. I didn’t say it was soft and cheesy. Playing four games a year against an expansion team and a team that was worse than an expansion team every year is nice if you can arrange it, though. Bill Belichick was fired if I’m not mistaken.
A lot of coaches have been fired in Cleveland. Name one who hasn’t? Bill Cowher was a great coach, 160-99-1, two AFC championships and one Super Bowl title in 15 years. I’ll gladly take that with Tomlin.
Chuck Noll should’ve been fired, too. He was terrible in the 1980s. Cowher took over Noll’s mess and turned the franchise into a contender nearly every season he coached. He did with O’Donnell, Tomczak, Stewart and a young quarterback named Roethlisberger. I’d say he did a pretty decent job for someone who “should have been fired in 2000.”
Get real.
Dave Wannstedt wouldn’t make a pimple on Bill Cowher’s ass.
He was lazy (by his own admission) in 98 and 99 and should have been fired. Noll’s “mess” included Rod Woodson, Carnel Lake, Greg Lloyd, Barry Foster, Bryan Hinkle, Dermonti Dawson,Hardy Nickerson, Greg Little, Tunch Ilkin, Justin Strelczyk, Jerry Olsavsky and Gary Anderson and a lot of other players who helped him win. It was time for Noll to go when he resigned. It was time for Cowher to go in 2000. He had to be ordered to draft Roethlisberger in 2004 by Dan Rooney. He thought Maddox was just fine after watching that 6-10 fiasco in 2003. He was 22-8 against the Browns and Bengals from 1992 through 1999, 56-43 against everybody else.
“He thought Maddox was just fine after watching that 6-10 fiasco in 2003. He was 22-8 against the Browns and Bengals from 1992 through 1999, 56-43 against everybody else”
1998 Kordell loses LT John Jackson to free agency: Kordell good.
2003 Maddox loses LT Marvel Smith to injury : Maddox bad.
See how the rules differ for players you like John?
Did he make Maddox a tight end?
“He was 22-8 against the Browns and Bengals from 1992 through 1999, 56-43 against everybody else”
This is priceless. John badmouths Cowher for his beating up the Browns and Bengals.
His hero’s record against those two teams from 1997-1999? 4-4.
Comedy friggin’ gold.
18-4 against them without Kordell, and only 4-4 against them with him.
Once again, we see where the problem lies.
So Cowher winning those four games a year in a poor division downplays his success, but Kordell beating those same teams on the field does not?
Got it.
You said they couldn’t even beat those pathetic teams with Kordell at QB. You, of course, were wrong.
Looking at the talent that is heading to Oakland, it is easy to believe that Wanny is building the premier Big East program for years to come. Pitt looks to have the most talent in the Big East this year with players like D. Lewis, J. Baldwin, G. Romeus and others. But look at their backups.
Behind Lewis is Ray Graham, Chris Burns, and now Poteat. Behind Baldwin is Devin Street and Mike Shanahan. Shayne Hale and Brandon Lindsay could start for most, if not every other, Big East teams. They’re both backups to Romeus and (hopefully) Jabaal Sherad.
Hopefully Wanny can lead a frontrunner (and I believe he can) because it looks like they might be the Big East favorite and a national player for years to come.
Quarterback is still a huge question mark.
Oh yeah.
He is not a great tactical coach. But, if they continue to win 8 games and above year after year, they’ll never get rid of him. The unfortunate truth is, if they got rid of Wannstedt and brought in an up and coming coach, the new coach would be gone as soon as he received a better offer. This would do nothing good for the program. Frankly, I’d rather have stability, then have what Louisville has gone through in the Petrino aftermath.
Pitt is not, at this point, a destination school unless you’re Dave Wannstedt.
Also, I’m not expecting Tino Sunseri to be the second coming of Dan Marino. All he needs to be is slightly above average and deliver the ball to Pitt’s talented receivers to take some pressure off Lewis. If he can come up with a big play every once in awhile, Pitt should win the Big East.
Tino Sunseri lacks experience but after watching him in numerous Spring practices, he has the intangibles to become a solid QB. Dion Lewis running the football is really going to open up the passing game for Sunseri.
Joe ., it appears Wanny is plucking blue chippers right out of JoPa’s backyard. Those areas have been traditionally his turf. Has Pitt stepped up their efforts or are they slipping a bit up there in State College ?
good analysis. Eastern PA and New Jersey are 2 big areas for Penn State. But Pitt is going head to head with Penn State on numerous prospects from those regions and many times beating Penn State on real good prospects. Recruiting goes in cycles.
Joe ., I think another concern is Ohio St coming in here and taking some of the best players from right under our nose. Then again ive heard rumors the Buckeyes payroll exceeds the Pirates. If Pitt had gotten Terelle Pryor I think they could play for the national championship this year. , no exaggeration.I’ve been going to high school games for 40 some years now and he’s the BEST player I ever saw at that level., just as good if not better on defense.
not only footbal but a big time small forward in basketball. Guys like Terrelle Pryor do not come around too often. Once he gets his reading defensive schemes down pat, he could be a very talented QB. He could be an excellent wide out, he could be like Jason Taylor and be a speed rushing DE. He is 235 and looks lean. He has a great football future.
John,
Did you read Jeff Reed’s comments in the PG’s paper this morning? He says he’s “extremely unhappy” about not getting his extension. He just may have gotten that extension if Adams wasnt needed to replace Colon. But alas,…..
My point is, Mr Sheetz needs to wise up and play. He was franchised and given a high salary. It also appears that he doesn’t realize he needs to clean up his act too. Complaining about contracts after 2 police incidents is not wise. Oh yeah, you’re a kicker!!!!!!
He should tiptoe into and out of work every day and hope that nobody notices him.
Excellent analysis, Joe. Expanding on the Sunseri question: do you think he will be an upgrade over Stull? Two years ago, I thought Mick Williams could play better QB than Stull, but he proved me and my fellow doubters wrong with a fantastic senior season (statistically). Still, I can’t help but feel Stull lacked both arm strength and some degree of big game mettle. From everything I’ve seen and heard, Sunseri is a more physically gifted passer. Thoughts?
Mario4Prez, Tino Sunseri can be a solid QB. There is one constant with Sunseri and Bill Stull. That is the addition of QB Coach Frank Cignetti who is an outstanding coach. Sunseri knows how to take care of the ball. When you have Jonathan Baldwin and Mike Shanahan both 6’5″ guys and a back like Dion Lewis, just take care of the ball. I know Tino and he has a great passion for the game. He takes after his Dad Sal and he is very football smart. He just lacks playing time.
we will see what tino can do at qb
i don’t care about the postitive reviews he is getting right now, before stull’s first season as a starter in 2008 wanny said he would be the surprise of the big east, he was terrible that entire year
you are right mickey. We can sit here and talk about Sunseri until the sun sets. He has to prove it on the field. One day at a time.
Let me ask this: Why has Pat Bostick fallen so far out of favor? This guy was heralded as a big time quarterback recruit. What’s the deal with him?
Remember than on the next letter of intent day.
