WHO SAID SPORTS FANS NEED TO GROW UP?

Thanks to poster GeeWhiz for the heads up on this look at the all too common modern sports fan:

(Rough language alert.)

This is a grown man who feels the need to wear his Ed Reed jersey when he’s watching a game on television.

But don’t let anybody tell you that there’s a problem in America with men refusing to grow up.

(I realize that, with Youtube, there’s always the possibility that it was staged, but my gut tells me this one is for real.)

If it was a genuine moment of overblown fandom, then its proof that people need to grow up. If it was staged for social media, then that kind of pathological attention-seeking is also proof that people need to grow up.

I want to emphasize that it’s “people” and not just “men” and not just “sports fans”. Sports fandom is just one of the more obvious indicators that society has become this kind of Peter Pan neverland-ish world where everybody wants to stay young forever.

Craig Ferguson, in my opinion the funniest man on late night TV in a long time, delivered this monologue a while ago that perfectly crystallizes what’s wrong with our society; why the obsession with wanting to look, feel, and act young forever is a really, really bad idea:

I don’t think it was staged because the cameraman seems to be really trying to hide the fact that he’s recording the ranter. Plus, if it were staged, I think the whole room would have a hard time keeping from laughing. There was an awkward silence when he “kicked out” his friends.

I bet that’s how Bobzilla acts when the Steelers lose, except he’s in a 58 Lambert jersey, hits his wife, kicks his dog, then calls Roethlisberger a rapist and screams at Arians for not running the ball on 3rd and 4.

I’m not a jersey or costume guy.

It seems that more costumes and jerseys are worn to NFL games than college games. I don’t understand why that is. When I go to see my college play, I like to dress like a guy who, you know, has been to and graduated from college. Not like a child. I’d be ashamed if I ran into a college classmate and I had a costume or jersey on.

Thanks for posting. This was fun to watch. I was unhappy when the Steelers lost, but my overall happiness in life is not dependent on the outcome of sporting events.

Interesting that the guy who recorded it on his cell phone had the guy who flipped out on camera just before he went nutso. Why would he be filming a bunch of dudes sitting on a couch? Cause it was staged.

If you get that out of control over a football game, how will you act when faced with a real issue in life?

It’s a wonder that guy didn’t go straight to the kitchen, get the butcher knife and slit his wrists. That’s the way I felt many a time after a tough Steeler loss. I just didn’t have the will to live anymore.

Well if he did go to the kitchen and get a knife, thank goodness he is a Ravens fan. They could have used the clothes that Ray Lewis was wearing to clean up everything and then hired his lawyers to make sure no one went to jail.

I don’t mind someone wearing a team’s jersey, as long as they wear it in appropriate places (not in church), and it doesn’t cause them to have an irrational attachment to their team.

If it was or wasn’t staged, this guy has issues. It’s this kind of fan that has made me stop attending sporting events.

I wear a Steeler’s shirt when they play, but my sense of self is not affected whether the Steelers win or lose. If your world turns on the outcome of a game, get some help.

I dont see the problem at all….i work for Bank of America ( yes i know the irony of me hating big buisness John ). We have Jersey days twice a month where everyone in the office will wear the jersy of their choice. I would estimate that out of 800 or so that work in my office, 700 participate.

I don’t have any problem with getting overly emotional about a football game. Sports is a billion dollar industry because people get emotional about it. Of course, there ‘s a huge difference between getting emotional and “fighting” for your team. I would never fight another person because of the result of a sporting event. Those are the people I have a real problem with.

Are sports necessary for our everyday lives? No, but they are important to the people that follow them. There is no right or wrong here, just a matter of opinion.

Overly emotional is one thing. Jumping up out of your seat, getting fired up, reacting to what happened, that’s all well and good.

In my opinion, it crosses a line when it turns into outward hostility towards others. The guy in this video tells his own friends to “get the f*** out” immediately after the dropped endzone catch.

I’m a Pittsburgh fan in Boston. I’m surrounded by Pats fans, including very good friends of mine. There have been plenty of occassions where I’ve been fired up over a game, or even just a play within a game, and ran my mouth, either to boast or to vent my frustration and my contempt for Bill Belichick. I’m making a conscious effort to stop it. Oprah would call that “empowerment” I call it growing up. I’m dreading watching Superbowl 46 with my buddies, but I’m going to suck it up and do it anyway and keep my mouth shut, because Superbowl Sunday is fun and hanging out with my friends is more important than ostricizing myself for being a Steelers fan in Pats territory.

Getting overly emotional isn’t necessarily bad. But sports aren’t worth losing friends over.

Mike from Bostom: There’s a remedy for that: Watch the game by yourself. I’ve never understood the need to be in a roomful of people in order to enjoy the entertainment value of a televised sporting event.
I hate to be around the dreaded “casual fan.” They are annoying, say dumb things and simply aren’t bright enough to add insight into what’s being shown on TV.
For years, I’ve watch the Steelers with my son. The few times that I’ve slipped up and tried watching with a female or a buddy who doesn’t share my same interest, I’ve regretted it.
Watching alone is rather peaceful and pleasant. The chips last longer that way, too.

I agree with Bob. a few years ago i was watching game 6 of the Pens/sens series with some friends. it was me. my buddy and about 6 girls in the room. this is what i heard all night.

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH OH MY GOD FLUERY SUCKS ANYWAY BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH

None of the girls were watching the game and I couldnt hear a thing over all the constant chatter about purses and make up and my buddy was vivibly annoyed. Since then I’ve tried to avoid watching games with other people.

Staged or not, there was a kid in the room while he was pointing to his crotch and yelling for people to suck it. Even I wouldn’t do that, and I get overly emotional about sports.
