Just Watch the Game Blog

This is my first posting on the JUST WATCH THE GAME blog. The plan here is to blog at least once a day and probably several times a day. JUST WATCH THE GAME is the title of the book that I’ll be releasing in a few months and you’ll be able to read excerpts at justwatchthegame.com.
I guess I should get my two cents in on Ben Roethlisberger:
First of all, none of this surprises me. Ben is a bad citizen. He doesn’t know how to treat people and he definitely doesn’t know how to handle being the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. In my more than 30 years of working in the Pittsburgh sports media, I have never had any player come close to generating as many unsolicited questions from fans as Roethlisberger has. They want to know why he’s such a jackass. And these aren’t just Steelers fans who got turned down for an autograph. It’s men and women from all walks of life.
Most of the accounts of the incident in Georgial mention that Ben wasn’t drinking much. The implication being that he wasn’t high. Let me be the first to point out that he could very easily have been high on something other than alcohol. If that turns out to be the case, will you be surprised?
If this jackass is charged with sexual assault, the NFL should immediately suspend him for several games next season. If the league doesn’t, the Steelers should. We hear all the time about how the Rooney family does things differently. This is a chance to prove it. It’s one thing to suspend or cut a third receiver or a backup lineman. Suspending a $100 million quarterback would really set the Rooneys apart.
Roethlisberger is a punk who needs to be knocked down a peg or two.
A couple of years ago I heard from a woman who said that Roethlisberger blew off a Make-A-Wish kid. When KDKA-TVs News Director, John Verrilli, was shown the email, he made it clear that it was a story that his news department would not be pursuing. I eventually got in contact with the parents of the little girl who the jackass snubbed. They said the story was true but they didn’t want to go public with it for their daughter’s sake. The little girl had cystic fibrosis.
As I said, Bad citizen who needs a comeuppance.

I absolutely loved your book , ” Just Watch The Game “. Never read a book so honest , entertaining , and relevant to Pittsburgh sports from the 70’s on up. Couldn’t get enough of it and didn’t want the book to end. One of my favorites.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com John Steigerwald

      Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Juan

You’re unbelievably bad at what you do…

    • http://justwatchthegame.com John Steigerwald

Then why do you care what I write and why are you here? I’ve been bad at it for almost 40 years now.

  • http://word16.wxd.pl pressel page

What i don’t understood is actually how you are not actually much more well-liked than you might be right now. You’re so intelligent. You realize therefore significantly relating to this subject, made me personally consider it from a lot of varied angles. Its like men and women aren’t fascinated unless it’s one thing to do with Lady gaga! Your own stuffs outstanding. Always maintain it up!

  • Dick Kraft

I’m not a blogger. How do I know if you get my comments? Do your have an E-mail address?

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I got this one, so you’re getting through.

  • John Patrick

So, are you guys back in the bandwagon now since You are back in the superbowl? Meake sure that you guys do not waive your towels since Big Ben is still your quarterback like you say here.

It’s funny how reporters want to get recognized by athletes and write demeaning things to them because they did not say hi to you. Get a life and you are right “Just watch the freakin game” and keep your opinions to yourself.

  • jim

Not that I was parsing every sentence, but when you ripped Clyde for poor grammar, I had noticed that you had three mistakes yourself. “To” when you meant “too.” Lisa Guerrero’s name misspelled, and sportscasterettes (which isn’t actually a word, but you misspelled it).

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Typos compared to “Yes we is?”

  • Joe Orlowski

    Mr. Steigerwald,

I’m a big fan of yours and hope to get to one of the book signings this weekend.
I hope all is well in your world and miss your biting sarcastic take on various topics. I look forward every Sunday to reading your column in the paper. Good luck with everything!

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

      Thanks, Joe.

The pitching coach referenced in Chapter #12 has to the the infamous Frank Funk…
I enjoyed the book., especially the chapters about playing the pick up games…..the closest we got to a big name in our pick up football games was a guy Dale Cowher, Bill’s older brother..

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

      Was he any good?

  • James

    your opinions suck

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Your posts enrich us all. Thanks.

The behavior of pro atheletes went downhill when they stopped having to take a job in the off season. I can remember Steve Blass and Dave Guisti selling class rings at Baldwin High. These guys knew what it was like to have to work for a paycheck.
Guys like Ben have had the behind kissed all their lives. They don’t know what is is like to have to work for a paycheck. They play childrens games and act like spoiled children.

  • Joanne

Hi John, just found this blog when I read about your book!! Just ordered the book! Grew up in your neighborhood (Scott) and met you again when you and your wife came to the Wildlife Center! Great blog! I think the Raider who smacked Ben should get a reward, not a fine!! Your are so correct!! I am really peeved that they cut Reed. They cut him and keep a jackass! Go figure.

  • TOM

The “Ben Behaving Badly” stories will, obviously, go away, as we let them. What about the cheap shot Ben took Sunday from an Oakland defender? That sock to the chops had absolutely NO relevance to the game. Let’s see the NFL make a serious example of Oakland’s Mr. Seymore for his “HIT”. This moron had better get at LEAST a two-game suspension, and fines TRIPLE what our linebacker endured for a LEGAL Hit. You can almost bet it won’t happen, since he’s not a steeler. You’d swear the leage has it in for the Steelers (and guaranteed, I’m far from the only fan that thinks so) The National (FLAG) Football Leeeeg has 20-15 vision when a Steeler makes a hit. If Ben had retalliated, he’d face Harrison-esque fines ! The field officials have been reduced to a “yes man” (or “Ma’am) role. Time to throw the flags at the NFL !!

  • Jim Heaney

John, i wish you the best on your book and have enjoyed listening to you all these years. I am a retired professional wrestler and have been a loyal fan of Pittsburgh’s teams all my life. After reading the article in the Post Gazzette today I felt the need to write on your blog. My carrer was nothing steller and my behavior at times not honorable. Having been with the larger companies in the business over the years many opportunities were given to me. One of the greatest was Make A Wish.

When my best friend and I were with th WWF we were asked to visit a 14 year old young man at the Don Imus hospital in NJ. His time on earth cut short and he wanted to meet us. That was his wish. God bless him. How could anyone blow one of these kids off? How can you not give a fan a moment of your time. Scenes I have witnessed throughout sports and entertainment.

Like Big Ben, we are given the chance to “play” whatever it is we are blessed with the talent to do. God grated us huge gifts that most people have never been afforded. How can we turn our back on a fan. there are some that interupt ourdinners out etc… but at the very least, be polite as that works in most cases.

It sickens me to my core that Ben has acted this way on a number of occassions. The fans pay our saleries so lend them a minute, especially the sick.

People can change when the want to. I have and I have witnessed it many many times. Sports has created monsters of ego and disregard even with morals clauses they have seemed to rarely enforce.

With Big Ben a 4 game suspension was not enough. The Rooney’s should have made it for the season. His action derserve at the very least that. History will tell if he changes and I believe in giving all in this world that chance.

    God bless,

  • TOM

Most will agree ,by this point, that the weak link in the Pirates food chain is the Coonelly/ Nutting brigade. Is there anything the league would be authorized to do ??

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Establiush a salary cap or eliminate the franchise.

  • TOM

Did John Russell deserve to be fired? Hard to say. He’s a good fundamental manager & good “teacher”…but , time and again, way to many lapses in “fundamentals” on the players’ parts: over-running bases, throwing to the wrong base, outfielders running to where a fly-ball is ,rather than where it’s going, inability to bunt, etc; pitcher’s lack of focus and fear of their own lack of control, except on a 3-0 count when they HAVE to drill one front & center to the point where I could take him downtown, in my fifties, or a good 18 year old, too! Too many of them that don’t appear to have a good feel for the game. Obviously, you can’t teach talent–you teach “skills” If that’s the case, then Mr. Russell, and staff aren’t preparing their players to a sound level of play. Lacking the talent…well, that’s another issue. Naturally, we all knew the Pirates weren’t about to contend…and, NO..not even make .500. BUT—no way should they have lost 105 games !! They could have (and SHOULD have ) gone 78-84, OR 79-83. THAT wasn’t asking too much–even for THIS team! SURE , they under-achieved, and something needed done–can’t relese the Team!

  • TOM

Could there be “common sense” legislation on the way? Let’s hope . A local gentleman could very well wind up prosecuted for fighting off a home invader. I’m not trying to make it “bash the Lawers” night- but don’t we all agree THAT’S where most of this problem starts ?? Even criminals, are constitutionally entitled to due process. We all are. Are we, however, entitled to commit fraud ? Absolutely not!! That’s exactly what these individuals are doing–on our legal system. I guess I’d wind up holding my own “starving attorney” sale-because I couldn’t, with good conscience, represent someone like that ! Prosecute a robber–in a heartbeat ! These lawsuits aren’t just frivolous-capitalizing on a victim’s loss for fraudulent gain shouldn’t escape accountability, in my book ! Any laws to reduce this diseased logic is way overdue. And please, no more excuses, like he was drunk…on drugs, etc. Those are, believe it or not, LEARNED & CHOSEN behaviors. How about CHOOSE NOT to do CRIME !!

  • TOM

What is this idiotic fascination with “Lady Gaga” ? She is ,at best, a poor man’s Madonna- with even LESS talent ! What little I saw and heard of her was enough to make a billy goat puke (to quote Richard Crenna,as Colonel Trautman in Rambo) Does anyone in their right mind actually think she is a skilled singer? I’m sure some moron will say something like, “Look at the frenze The Beatles generated ” One: The Beatles had actual talent. Two: they created themselves by their own design-they weren’t “manufactured” by a record label or production team…i.e: Spice Girls, Monkees, most of motown,Phil Spector’s “girl” groups,In Sync, etc. etc. I guess the “controversial” persona sells! News footage of the socially dysfunctional crowds in line for a concert ticket recently, sort of says it all. If that’s what they call “entertaining” God help them!! Hopefully, with age , wisdom will follow , BUT, we can’t take that for granted. Now, I’ll go watch someone worthwhile and time-honored,like The Three Stooges… at least there’s no pretense or controversy there!

  • TOM

Does anyone recall, back to Ben’s 1st or 2nd season, when the NFL made him remove a religious symbol he had attached to his uniform ?such type of display, reportedly, violates league policy. Hmmmm…Is B.R. simply a devout hypocrite, or memory-challenged ?? One with only marginal moral codes would suggest Ben practices what he preaches. Whether these young women were willing partakers (we still don’t know) or not is irrelevant!! A REAL man knows how to behave like a gentleman, and treats a woman with RESPECT! Safe to say, not just in professional circles, but in sports at any level, we’re tired of the “Hey baby,I’m a JOCK attitude. People aren’t impressed. Show respect,Ben for the values your faith-based items suggest .

  • TOM

How much longer do we have to watch the Duke-Maholm show? A decent would simply release both of them outright after this season! After five seasons apiece, neither has proved to be anything close to an “impact” pitcher. One of the “team” announcers actually remarked, recently, that P.M. has carved out a pretty good career for himself. What pitcher was he watching?!? People have suggested trade one or the other for “prospects”. They couldn’t get anything substantial for Jason Bay. What kind of return could they possibly expect for these pitchers? The Pirates should simply cut their losses with these two.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

The Pirates just need to cut their losses.

  • http://www.fun-freegames.com Fungame

Good posts. I have book marked your blog. Thanks 🙂

Everyone reporting this crap on Roethlisberger should lose all credentials. It is unbelievable to me that writers are interviewing & reporting on things that drunks say happened in bars and nightclubs. You could find people to say negative things about anybody. Especially athletes. The higher profile athlete, the more stories there are and the more people will embelish them. Search hard enough and you could find theres someone out there willing to say bad things about anybody. Even you Mr Steigerwald. How about “JUST REPORT ON THE GAME” …you should be embarrassed for using these alleged incedents to try to resurrect your carreer. And the writer for SI should be fired!

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I’m starting an investigation today to find out why all these people are lying about Ben Roethliusberger.

  • Mitch

He was a jerk in high school too, I sat with him in class so I was there to watch it all. Also played football with him. He was respectful to the teachers and authorities however, but not a lot of other high school people liked him.

  • BFWoodson

All these over-reactions to the whole Big Ben saga (is he really that bad??) is NOTHING in comparison to what antics and shenanigans that bestowed arguably one of the Greatest players of Australian Rules Football’s Wayne Carey. Some of you may have heard of him.. he has actually assaulted a Florida policeman for that matter (after retirement). On Field, he was a BEAST!! (think domination) He was the type that many other opposition supporters HATED but still knew it’s exactly the type of player they wanted to play for their team. Admired by many yet despised like no other. Big Ben has only transgressed on a minor scale.. CAREY was already a felon (charged for indecent assault) of a female in the early hours of the morning after a play-off loss (read: Conference Championship) …but you know what… in the upcoming years.. his ON-FIELD DOMINANCE overshadowed his negatives. Winning Two Championships in 4 years (very ironic to the Steelers) and losing one. To cut a long story short.. Wayne Carey was was actually FIRED by his own team-mates… having to ‘unceremoniously force to retire’ from the club. This happened because of being caught on the spot with a team-mate’s wife in the bathroom… two weeks before the actual 2002 season started!!! Team still made the play-offs
without him. Would of gone alot further with him.. maybe win the club’s Third Championship in that era of the ’90’s & early 00’s..

On field Arrogance played a big part in Carey’s dominance and ‘persona’. No Doubt.
Big Ben is a play-ful puppy off the field in comparison who will need to realise that he must make smarter adjustments.

And make no mistake, IMHO, the Six week suspension has clearly SAVED his career as the Steelers QB.. he would of been most likely traded if it were say 2 weeks. I know how important it is to have a franchise QB and the Rooney’s have to hold their nerve. Smart move.

I’ve been a passionate Steelers fan since 1989.

  • Kathleen

I wish Ben would have been traded! I want the players with heart in Pittsburgh . . . people my son can look up to!

  • Joanie

Big Ben has talent, but he has shown that being talented doesn’t mean you are the sharpest tool in the shed.He may have the size and all..I mean who else out there can see over the whole front line? And doesn’t even have to back out of the pocket to do it?But when you see him,and really look at him….Well, it’s a No Brainer, cause Big Ben will forever be stupid Ben!! such talent wasted..

  • Brooks

I hope he gets traded. It would be tough to pull for a team that he is on. Worst case scenario he is a rapist who should be in prison for the next 25 years. Best case scenario he is a sexual predator who has no problems getting a 20 year old girl so drunk that she can no longer speak coherently and have sex with her in a bar bathroom while his “security guards” stand outside and stop the girls’ friends from coming into the restroom to stop the sexual act. I know it isn’t much but I will not support a team, financially or as a fan, that has him on the roster. I am also disgusted to think that 2 local policemen would allow this to happen as off duty security guards and them come back here to work to “serve and protect” me.

Sexual assault is a very serious subject and I never want it to look like I would support someone who would be capable of doing what has happened.

  • Diane

You chose the comparison my dear, not me. Sidney is a dear, a tremendous player, and Mario and his parents will not allow him to be anything other. These guys don’t need to call anyone when out on a date, my point is that they cannot live a normal life without the media hot on the trail. Ben is an ass, but I firmly believe that we added to the fire. Had he lived in the same cocoon in Dan’s house, living by Dan’s rules don’t you think it would have had the same effect as Sid?

  • Paul Rozmus

You should post a survey sometime, like in this case with Ben: have an over/under on how many games he’ll be suspended…….Love hearing you on THE FAN radio —- keep pushing for the elimination of all field goal kickers in the NFL!!!!!!

  • Diane

There is no comparison between Sidney Crosby and Ben. Sidney has been living in a carefully orchestrated cocoon since the day he arrived in Pittsburgh for just this reason. After all his parents and Mario made it part of his contract. He just has been smart enough to stay put. Maybe now that Ben’s parents are in town, they need to drag him home by the scruff of the neck and make him live by the same rules and curfews that Sidney has. By the way when was the last time you saw Sidney out on a normal date either?

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

For some reason Sid doesn’t call me or anybody else in the media when he goes out on a date. There has never been a better kid playing a sport in Pittsburgh than Sidney Crosby. it’s pretty pathetic when you’re suggesting that a 28 year old multimillionaire needs to have his parents around to keep him in line.

Mike Tomlin has done a great job letting this team unravel. In just a few short years our storied franchise is starting to look a lot like teams Pittsburgers have despised in the past. If you were born in Pittsbugh then you already know exactly what I am talking about. This team is the heart and soul of this city and there is a limit to the what Steeler fans should have to tolerate from its top paid player. Ben is not a leader. He is not a role model, he is simply a bad person with a consistent pattern of poor judgement and reckless behaviour.I would not want my son to be anything like him nor would I want him dating my daughter. In fact, He is a self centered jackass that should be be playing in LA if they ever get another franchise. Then he can hang out at the Viper room with his pal Kid Rock and all of the other Idols a guy like Ben aspires to be like. I would trade him even up for 20 other QB’s in the league and let him take his pathetic deviate lifestly with him He does not deserve to wear the uniform or live in our great city. For that matter, you take Tomlin with you when you go. See ya Ben. Go back to Ohio where you belong. Opps , I meant Hollywood!

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Sorry. I’m not going to blame Mike Tomlin for Holmes or Ben. He inherited both of them and, James Harrison, for that matter.

  • http://www.bipolarman.org Richard

Any true Steeler fan would be proud to send their 20 year-old daughter into the toilet with Ben.

    • guitarg.

      Dear Richard,

Please tell me you do not have any daughters! Your comment is beyond sick.

  • http://www.bipolarman.org Richard

    And he’s fat.

  • Diane

John, Perhaps the NFL should do more to prepare players for the life they will lead once they sign a professional football contract. Afterall we take these kids straight out of college, pay them millions and expect to own a part of them. When Ben first joined the steelers, I truly believe that WWJD stood for his faith in God who gave him the talent to play. Then we publicly told him it is not in the best interest of the NFL to thank God for his talent. After all heaven forbid we insult someone who thinks no god exists. We then expect him to stop eating in a restaurant if we want his autograph, after all we do own a part of him. We hound them so we can keep current with all their likes and dislikes. We feel we have the right to know how many times a day they use the bathroom and what consistency it had. One of my kids had the fortune of meeting Ben before he was a star. He was kind and welcoming to fans at practice signing footballs and shirts. That was before we made him into our super athlete. Perhaps the NFL and steelers alike need to tutor the players on the art of being a star in public and a human being in private. Perhaps we need to learn to respect their private, maybe then he could date like any other single man and not have to resort to calming his urges in a bathroom in georgia with a giggling drunk girl. I do not condone his behavior any more than I condone us for driving these kids to perform as stars. Football is a game perhaps we need to put it into the perpective it belongs.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

      Two words: Sidney Crosby.
By all accounts he was a jackass in college. Too many guys have been able to handle it for me to allow him the excuse of being a star. We’ve had plenty of them in this town and they were able to stay out of trouble and not acquire reputations as all around bad guys.

  • TrishD

I’ve seen the Steelers play at Forbes Field, Three Rivers and Heinz Field.
Been to every 70’s Steel Curtain parade as well as 40 and 43.
I have no idea how much money I’ve spent on tickets, stadium food, parking, sweatshirts, hats, etc over 40 years. Quite a bit.

BR is a great quarterback and a delight on the field.
However, I WILL NOT spend another penny on Steelers gear or tickets until Roeslisberger is gone.

I am one fan who will vote with her pocketbook.

    Good, to-the-point blog, John.
    Shame there aren’t more.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

You’d be surprised at how many people feel the way that you do. Trust me. Dan Rooney knows.

  • wizzard

Rape is to use the other person if they are unable to say no and does not understand what’s really happening for some reason. This applies to those that are drunk/stoned and more or less unconscious and unaware of what is happening as well as it applies on those that have mental disables and do not understand for that reason. This is because the person can’t give his/her consent or say no. No consent and it’s rape.

Then there is force of course, if one forces him/her self on the other then it’s rape. But force is not necessary, a no is a no and an orgasm does not make it a yes. Both men and women can reach an orgasm without wanting it, it’s body responses that doesn’t obey the mind and the will. When you are forced it’s not consensual and when you say no it’s not consensual.

So, 1. if she did not understand what was happening then it can be seen as rape. 2. No is no.

For studfinder, look at the answer in here, at least one says that “if you liked it it’s not rape”, and a lot of people think that reaching an orgasm is the same thing as liking it. That’s why I pointed out that reaching an orgasm does not mean that it’s a yes (or that you liked it). I keep coming across people over and over again that just doesn’t understand the difference and I find that really disturbing. There’s people out there that thinks that it’s not rape as long as the victim shows any sign of arousal or orgasm, and as long as the rapist get to that point in one or another way he/she didn’t really rape the victim.

    * 1 in 12 male students surveyed had committed acts that met the legal definition of rape or attempted rape. (Warshaw, Robin 1994 “I Never Called It Rape”)

    * In a survey of college males who committed rape, 84% said what they did was definitely not rape. (Warshaw, Robin 1994 “I Never Called It Rape”)
    Source: http://www2.ucsc.edu/rape-prevention/sta…

That’s ^^ what it’s all about. People don’t understand the difference, and it’s not just men even though that study was about men. Most of the guys in studies like that just doesn’t know the difference between “no is no” and “no is not no if it seems as if she likes it”.

  • wizzard

Legally, if the person is drunk, even if they don’t say ‘No’ it can still be considered rape. Court rulings have recently upheld this, broadening the definition of rape to include sex with the inebriated.

As Tehtaza mentions, reaching orgasm while saying “No” doesn’t make it a yes. Why would you wonder if “No” meant “Yes”? I’m disturbed.

If someone is so drunk, it’s likely they won’t remember everything that happened, they’re in no position to say “Yes.”, and it would be criminal to take advantage of them. If something, or someone helped them be that drunk, there is something very wrong indeed.

Did you drug someone, rape them, and now wonder if it wasn’t rape because they “orgasmed”? If so, don’t wonder. You’re a rapist. If not, this is still a very interesting question…

  • wizzard

Its not true that the girl is not talking to police. Her attorney was on Pittsburgh news stating that the media is reporting false information.. They are cooperating and tehre are more meetings with police….

I have not reported one “rumor”.

  • Joanne

Thanks for being so upfront with your readers. I think its time we stop putting these athletes on a pedestal and see them for what some of them really are. They are over paid and over idolized. This does not give them the entitlement to do what ever they want in spite of the consequences. Its time Pittsburgh Steeler fans realize this too. We idolize them way to much. We need to stop putting them on a pedestal that they do not all deserve.

  • UsedtobeaSteelerfan

I have turned my Pittsburgh Steelers chrome license plate border upside down, and it will stay that way until Ben is off of the team one way or the other.

  • meanbean

    Spot on!

Glad to see you blogging Mr. Steigerwald. You and I often share the same opinions on sports, especially baseball. I haven”t watched a world series for a decade and I once attended an average of 50 Bucco games a season.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Another man after my own heart. Now if we can only convince about 500,000 more people to do the same thing, we might get an NHL-style makeover and the Pirates would be back to being a real MLB team again.

  • Kat

John, did you check out the new episode of “South Park” the other night?

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Missed it. Heard Ben made the show. I’m sure his parents are proud.

  • Kilroy

You certainly have no axe to grind, do you John? While I agree with you about Roethlisberger as a person, the Steelers as a team will be far less a contender without him at QB. Contrary to what JoeD and others have said below, those two Lombardis the Steelers have won in this decade would not be in the Great Hall at Heinz if not for Ben Roethlisberger behind center. He was finally the QB to replace Terry Bradshaw after suffering through every LOUT from Cliff Stoudt to Tommy Maddox. If he goes, then it’s back to mediocrity. Will Steeler Nation accept it? I’m guessing not.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

What if he’s convicted? Would you be OK with him getting weekend furloughs to play for the Stelers?

  • JoeD

Thanks John, its about time someone called him out. Roethlisberger’s antics can’t be justified by Superbowls. His lude behavior in Pittsburgh’s night clubs and his mistreatment of Pittsburgh’s service industry has become common knowledge over the course of his career here. The Steelers organization is what wins Pittsburgh Superbowls not Ben Roethlisberger. In any case I’d rather watch a mediocre offense (which we had this year with him anyway) than watch him at the helm of my favorite team.

  • Federico Miranda

The Rooneys should trade this scumbag to some NO-integrity team. i can think in NE, WAS. He is an embarrasment to the team, the city, and the fans.

    John great blog.

Famous rich people are magnets for opportunists. Ben is a good guy. Don’t judge him too harshly. No charges were filed, must mean the chick in Georgia has a weak testimony.

      • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

He’s not evil by any means but, by most accounts not a good guy. Never did anything to me. Just have heard way too many bad stories about him. If one fourth of them are true he’s got a long way to go to reach good guy status.

I can see why you hit the trash button on this. Good luck getting into the locker room after this. I hope by ranting and losing credibility helps you sell those books!!

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I think in the long run I’ll gain credibility. Sometimes the price you pay for more credibility is fewer friends in the locker room. I can live with that.

      • fliplfop

Yup, gonna love this when it all blows over (in Ben’s favor) and poor Steigerwald is gonna be left standing like a moron ! for you to applaud the persons post who said ” the damage is done, guilty or not” ??? that’s a great way to report a story ! and that’s exactly what this will turn out to be….a ‘story’ with two sides where neither one is telling the truth ! it’ll all get washed under the rug, Ben will be playing in september, the Rooney’s will adore him and YOU will be the least credible ‘reporter’ on the web ! as far I’m concerned you already are….why don’t you go and pick up on Sandra Bullock’s hubby. There’s not much you can make up there since it’s already out, but atleast the public (and you ) have to credible sides to go on ! Have you contacted the little college kid that was hanging on and drinking with Ben that night ? last i knew, doing shots of tequila bring on black out situations (and cause people to fall down…on their own)….i bet she couldn’t tell you what happened that night any better than YOU can (considering you weren’t there and no nothing but what your other media goo roos are making up !) what a joke you are and how embarrassing to the true journalists out there !

        • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

          We’ll see. Nice name.,

one other thing……to call BR a jackass ? Look in the mirror dufus !! my wife said you have to be the ugliest man on the face of the earth who is in dire needs of journalistic training !

          You’re killing me.

          • fliplfop

yup, that’s what I figured ….that’s all you got ….yeah, let’s just wait and see how all ‘well researched’ information goes down the toilet with the rest of your commentary (if that’s what you want to call it !) . oh and when the rest of the world feels that Ben Roethlisberger should treat people the way YOU think he should, then I’m sure they’ll let you know ! do some research on that cystic fibrosis kid. She was one of a million ! I guess you assume he should visit every one of them ? have you bothered looking at what he HAS done ? You can as easily look up the good things that he’s done ! You can find them if you take a minute of your ‘oh so precious’ BS time… oh, but that’s right…that would make YOU LOOK (more) STUPID !

          • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

You don’t have clue about the case I was referring to. People don’t come up me and say “I waited on Ben and he was nice to me.” He’s SUPPOSED to be nice. And as I wrote in an earlier post, autograph seekers get no sympathy here. None.

        • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Yeah. What does shoe know? My wife disagrees. I just asked her.

          • fliplfop

oh , but I do ! you’d get some credit if you posted some of the charities that BR HAS appeared at and contributed to….but you aint’ got the Ballllls to do that ! do ya !!

          • fliplfop

Ben Roethlisberger is one of the biggest celebrities in Pittsburgh, PA and he is lovingly referred to as “Big Ben”. Big Ben is the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers but in the eyes of fans he is much more than a football hero.

“Big Ben” founded The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation to help police departments and fire departments get grants and funding for k-9 units and service dogs.

Roethlisberger recently made a commitment to donate $8,000 to the Jeannette Police Department, according to Pittsburgh TribLIVE. The money donated will go to covering the cost of the department’s police dog; Wando.

Police dogs rely on donations and fundraisers from their human counter-parts for their care and for bullet-proof vests. Vests can range in price and be upward of $900.

Alexis Jenny, Pittsburgh Animal Health Examiner, has written about the need for bullet-proof vests for police dogs and about organizations like Ben Roethlisberger’s. According to Jenny’s report, some states have started programs that provide vests for police dogs. One such organization is Vest-a-Dog, an Illinios non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the lives of k-9 police dogs. Yet, Pittsburgh has no program like this in place.

Credibility? On what – the Make A Wish issue?

How about a time frame, a date, a place? What was Ben supposed to do that he didn’t do? Or are you just floating the allegation out there and the reader fills in the details? I mean you said you got an email directly from the kid’s mother, you can fill in the details without giving away your source. That’s credibility?

        • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

The story I was told was that he was suppsoed to meert the gilr after practice on the South Side on Friday and he just left. Hines Ward took over for him. gave the kida signed ball, some flowers etc. Evreybody apologized for Ben and told her that she would meet her after the game on Sunday. Ben had a bad game and blew her off again. Last week I talked to a spokesperson who was working for Make-A-Wish at the time. I gave her a chance to deny the story and she said. “All I will say that Make-A-Wish doesn’t comment on individual wishes and the Steelers have been great partners with us.” I took that as a yes.

          • John ferratino

so you ‘took that as a yes’ ? well, that’s stupid !! and why report something that you don’t know the facts ? It’s people like you that give reporters/media a bad name. You report what ‘you believe to have heard’ or what ‘you believe to be true’ (based on your own warped feelings/attitude) and expect the public to believeYOU ! well, I don’t believe a damn word you say ! you’re not even a ‘real reporter’ …and I believe you were even actaully FIRED by KDTV ?? HMMMMMM !!
you hold a lot of ‘credit’ to your name ! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

          • fliplfop

no need to PROVE it ??? are you kidding me ? I guess she can say ” it was him ” and they believe it ??? without DNA proof ? how does anyone know it’s his ‘stuff’ ! you’re a moron !! he’d be in jail by now , as would thousands of other people, if there were no need to ‘prove it’.. and by the way , moron, ‘sexual contact’ can be a kiss !! of course, you probably wouldn’t know that !

find another story to make up !!! how about Warren Sapp? charges were dropped, but I guess he’s still guilty too, right ?
            GET A JOB !

          • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

He admitted having sexual contact with her. Therefore they don’t need his DNA to prove that he had sexual contact with her. I know that’s a complicated thing but try to keep up.

          • SteelerNation

According to KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, the alleged victim has declined to be re-interviewed by authorities. She last talked to police on the evening of the alleged incident.

Unless the alleged victim, who has retained private counsel, has opted to focus only on a civil claim, the move makes no sense. And even if she plans to focus on the civil claim, a viable criminal case provides a high degree of leverage.

Then there’s the possibility that there has been a secret and confidential settlement, and that the deal specifically required her to no longer cooperate with the criminal investigation.

          • fliplfop

  • http://justwatchthegame.com Bobzilla

When’s the (stinkin’) media going to get it? They can’t be constantly blowing smoke up someone’s rear end without that person thinking he/she is entitled to special treatment.
Ron Cook wrote a column in which he said Roethlisberger’s only crime is poor judgement. C’mon!!! He had restroom sexcapades in a public place.
The local media act like an innocent, unsuspecting Roethlisberger waundered into a bar to unwind from yet another tough week of being young, rich and famous, and was suddenly blindsided by a gold-digging wench.
By the sounds of things, Roethlisberger and his police posse stormed into that small Georgia town with all the bravado of a rock star. By instructing his “bodyguards” to not allow men, but women only, into a nightclub’s VIP room, Roethlisberger was making it clear he wasn’t there to talk football. Evidently he was on the prowl, looking for potential sexual partners.
Guilty or innocent, the damage has been done. And now it’s going to be interesting to see how much longer the Rooneys are willing to allow this ego maniac hold their proud and low-key franchise hostage.
Based on his growing weight problem, his series of alleged concusions, his lack of arm strength to throw the deep ball and his inability to keep his pants up in public, Steelers Nation ought to be more than willing to see the Rooneys send this guy packing.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

This is the ABSOLUTE BEST POST ON THE SUBJETC. There is nothing to add. Tremendous.

  • wizzard

The sad point in all of this is not the fact of is he innocent or guilty, but why, with a man o bens status is even in this position…

  • wizzard

Got this information from another post…… but its interesting:

Are the participants old enough to consent?

In the state of California, Unlawful Sexual Intercourse, commonly known at Statutory Rape, states the minimum age someone must be to have sex is 18. People below this age are considered children and cannot legally agree to have sex. In other words, even if the child or teenager says yes, the law says no. Generally, “I thought she was 18” is not considered a legal excuse, it’s up to you to make sure your partner is old enough to legally take part.

Do both people have the capacity to consent?

California law outlines who has the mental and legal capacity to consent including people with a mental disorder or developmental or physical disability, as well as some elderly people,

**>> and people who have been drugged or are unconscious during the sex act. <<**

this part is very interesting. If ben bought her drinks and she was so drunk she couldnt comprehend at the moment what was going on, is he guilty ? Possible…

Did both participants agree to take part?

Did someone use physical force to make you have sexual contact with him/her?
Has someone threatened you to make you have intercourse with them?
If so, it is rape. It doesn't matter if you think your partner means yes, or if you've already started having sex. "No" also means "Stop."
If you proceed despite your partner's expressed instruction to stop, you have not only violated basic codes of morality and decency, you may have also committed a crime under the laws of your state (check your state's laws for specifics).

Dont know if anyone got to catch the John Fedko zone hre in pittsburgh pa. A pittsburgh woman called in and said she and her husband frequent a bar where Roethilsberger goes. The woman said she had a chance to look into his eyes and he is “pure evil”. She went on to say she witnessed first hand his drinking and his abuse of women.. She said come on john, all these people cant be making up stories about him., there are just too many. Fedko said, well Steigerwald has a blog site with tons of information about the antics of Roethlisberger.. Bad stories piling up agianst him…

You’re a joke, Stigerwald. Way to imply the Ben uses drugs. I don’t care how nice he’s ever been to YOU. You don’t imply things like that and if I were him I would sue your ass for libel.

    • SteelerSam

I got to agree with this post John. In all fairness it appears you are trying to stir up interest by becoming the Howard Stern of the blog world.

I always enjoyed watching you when you were on TV but just because your on the net now doesn’t mean you should forget about journalistic integrity.

You’re opinion, Mr. Steigerwald, unfortunately morphs into “fact” as people take your post and twist and turn in until people take your assumptions as the truth.

It won’t be long, mark my words…maybe it will take a few weeks or a few months, but I promise those here that they will start to hear rumblings of “I heard Big Ben is a pot head…”

Give it a few more weeks and then you will get “I hear Big Ben was smoking pot in the club house and Arnie Palmer told Ben never to come back because he offered a joint to his grandkids…”

People THIS sadly is how all those rumors start. John, you said so yourself that Ben never wronged you or anyone you know yet you are on a campaign to destroy the kid just because of all the questions you’ve heard from people that ask why Ben is such a jerk.

This is why people are so surprised when they ask me what Ben is really like to hang out with and I have nothing but good to say. They always say “I’ve heard all these terrible stories…” and I always reply did Big Ben ever do anything terrible to YOU or anyone you actually know? All these rumors but nobody seems to have a real life example of Ben being a jerk…again people should compare these Ben rumors to Bigfoot and UFOs…until you actually see either DON’T BELIEVE it!

John, this leaves me with this question…why didn’t you carry out a similar smear campaign for Kordell Stewart?

There were countless rumblings when Kordell Stewart was the Steeler QB that he was found in a park doing ungodly things to little boys or that he was caught in a car performing sexual acts on another man. Surely you heard all these rumors, for God’s sake, my buddies in Dallas and Cleveland even joked about it.

I didn’t buy any of those ridiculous and terrible lies about Kordell either but you didn’t waste time writing about those unfounded “rumors” so why would you make it a point to do so with Ben? John, you take it to another level, you admit that he never wronged you or anyone you know yet you call Ben a jerk and punk. You can blame the “fans” but you help create this monster.

John I heard from a very reliable source that the reason you despise Big Ben is that he refused to do interviews with you. I also heard that it was because you reminded Big Ben of John Ratzenberger, better known as Cliff Clavin from Cheers. It is a little known fact that John Ratzenberger is Ben Roethlisberger’s 1st cousin and that Ratzenberger, though Ben Roethlisberger’s close relative, is a die hard Patriots fan. Ben accepted the notion that his relative was a Patriots fan but Ratzenberger crossed the line in Roethlisberger’s eyes when Ratzenberger called Roethlisberger after the Steelers lost to the Patriots in the 2004 AFCC game in 2005 and rubbed the lost in young Roethlisberger’s face.

Ben has told close friends that he always thought John Steigerwald maintains an uncanny resemblance to Ratzenberger and that is why he always ran the other way when he saw you John!!

      • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

        You need help.

  • Hoss

In all fairness, John, I remember meeting you a few years back at a Pitt football event as a college student and told you politely that I enjoyed your work and you blew me off like I was being a nuisance. Ironic.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I tried not to give that impression, If I did, i apologize.

  • wizzard

John, i believe by the old saying where there is smoke, there is a fire. This has been going on too long with Roethlisberger. He definitely has a problem. People in findlay, ohio, where Roethlisberger grew up says he was a heavy drinker and abused women wack in his High School days. There is a long standing pattern of heavy drinking and abuse of women. A woman called in to The Fedko Fone Zone last nite and said she had witnessed the acts of Roethlisberger, and that she looked into his eyes many times, and he is pure evil. This guy definitely has a problem. All these stories just are not made up. All these people cant be lying. Its funny how Roethlisberger supporters are so quick to jump and discredit anyone who says bad things about him. I guess everyone is wrong and ben is right. Time to send him packing. And, maybe to the state pen where he will have a chance to do some long hard thinking… Possibly with big bubba in a late nite cell counseling session. Get a taste of his own medicine… Thanks John and keep up the good work

    • The_Game

Again, as I mentioned scorned women have a reason to make up stuff about Roethlisberger. They’re ticked off because they were rejected by him like the woman from the Fedko Zone. I have several friends in Findlay and they say he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. I also know plenty of Pittsburghers who say the same thing.

Apparently, Ben didn’t sign your kid’s autograph so now you’re bashing him too. You probably were one of those who gleefully added to the Kordell rumors and helped run him out of town as well.

  • lenny

    Hi John
Your comments are well justified and correct. Ben needs to clean up all aspects of his life and learn humility. In order to make this happen he will first have to admit there is a problem and not be in denial. It takes a man to throw a football and direct a team but it takes a real man to admit his faults and be able to clean-up his act. Ben does need to keep his nose clean and that along with staying off the alcohol will allow him to save his football career but first enable him to save himself before he becomes another statistic that we will forever talk about (what might of been) example: Mike Tyson if he could of just kept his nose clean.

    See you at Penny’s Diner

    Thank You

Could not agree with you more about Ben Roethlisberger’s conduct and character. You can see that his teammates, whether they publicly admit it or not, just do not care for the man. He is as much a disgrace to football as Tiger Woods is to Golf. If the Rooney’s hold true to their hight standard legacy, Ben should be traded or cut!!! Not suspended.

Keep up the good work. I will be a repeat visitor.

  • al clements

I recall the Jerome Bettis thing…in a car outside a “club”. Also Fats Holmes shooting at “whatever” near the Ohio and Pa Turnpike. Santonio caught with ‘blunts”, Harrison’ spousal abuse.
Nothing has matched this level of publicity. Even the Nevada item had died out. What’s next?
Perhaps Ben has taken a page out of Tiger Woods autobiography (which hasn’t been written yet). Guess we all expect Ben to act like Bradshaw…..oh shucks…………..

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Acting like Bradshaw would be a huge improvement.

      • al clements

Sure would be a BIG improvement, but…aw shucks, the yinz ran him outta town too; then they chased away Stewart…the list does go on and on. Wonder what the yinz would have if Bradshaw and compnay had not won all those Super Bowls? How’d they like the “old teams” that I followed since the late 50’s, lose some, win one and lose OJ draft choice.. I don’t mind your report as such, but the fickle yinz….damn!! Guess one is only as good as the last game won then all hell breaks loose…..Iffen the Pens don’t get another Stanley or Sid is accused of something…..what then? I dunno either.

        • Kat

Sid doesn’t have a rep as being a total ******. Quite the opposite, in fact.

  • Melinda

I dont know how you can bash Ben with such words. He has never done anything wrong, therefore never had any criminal records…and then to say he was high on drugs??? Never any accusations of him being on anything has ever surfaced. Ben is who is, and no one can change that. ANY girl can say they were raped, assaulted, whatever to get what they want when they want because they seem to have that power. i agree that Ben needs to stop putting himself in these kind of situations and not go places where these things can become. he asked for this profession so these things always happen even with celebs. but there is NO NEED to bad mouth Ben until you have the right facts that are legally proven in court.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Never said he was high on anything. Sorry.

      • Melinda

what your wrote pretty much implies thats what you meant “Let me be the first to point out that he could very easily have been high on something other than alcohol. If that turns out to be the case, will you be surprised?”

        • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

What i wrote is exactly what I meant. If you’re going to point to the fact that he wasn’t drinking as evidence that he was in control and was less likley to have done what he was accused of doing, you also have to ask if he might have done what he was accused of doing becuase something else caused him to be out of control That is NOT an accusation.

  • al clements

John, I have followed you and Bob P for years on KDKA and have read your column for as long as you have written it.
To the point, I think Ben is a JERK. That said, there are only accusations thus far..”she said, he said”. It just well might be smoke but no fire. At this point I would give the man the benefit of a doubt. No charges have been filed, in either case. And naturally people are coming out of the woodwork with stories. Even I know of one where Ben was hitting on a girl at a Penguins game…this I know is true. In this case he was being a real JERK; course this was his rookie year, so……..
Problem is that every strory that is told further paints Ben as a, in your words, “bad citizen”; every “news story” by any media adds credence to the allegations. You, as a respected media type should be aware of this…why can’t you and the rest of the wait to see the results?
Okay, I think Ben is a JERK, placing himself in situations that lead to problems; since he is a “star”. Does this make him guilty of anything but being an arrogant expletive? You even state this…..heard that, been told that……have you sen that???

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

The sheer volume of “Why is he such a _____” questions makes it hard to defend him. Even the people who respond to defend him are adding their own stories about what a ________he is.

  • The_Game

After reading some comments on here and other sites, I want to remind everyone that Ben has not been charged with a crime in either case.

If he’s cleared of these charges, I would hope that John and everyone else who have been accusing him, would apologize.

You can speculate all you want, but none of us knows what happened. I don’t care what kind of character Ben has, you weren’t there. So while it’s fun to speculate, you don’t have all the facts.

Sure, if he’s charged and found guilty, then I would hope the legal system will punish him. Until then, I believe he’s innocent.

Well, John, you can take the girl outta Pittsburgh, but you can’t take Pittsburgh outta the girl – been in the Twin Cities now for 21 yrs and still bleed black and gold.

Saw a headline the other day “Roethlisberger – Criminal or Idiot?” and I don’t think I could have said it better, for he will fall under one of those (or both) categories. And then a friend sent me a link to your blog here – I appreciate the truths that you speak (I live among Minnesota Nice here, and it means to tell people what they want to here. Drives me crazy, and everyone thinks I am almost too direct for speaking the truth!) I am so hoping that Tomlin and the Rooneys will have zero tolerance on his behavior, and that they make the right decisions to uphold the high standards that I believe accompany this storied franchise. When I think of the Rooney family, I think of a classy act, and it disappoints me that Ben doesn’t exercise better judgment with his actions. May we NOT have another Mike Tyson on our hands, and if we do, may they throw the book at him.

It’s time to grow up Ben. This isn’t college anymore.

I’ll admit, I thought it was a little suspect when those posts were taken down, so I’m glad you were able to recover them. I don’t see my comment that you responded to, so I’ll paraphrase. I mentioned about the concept of “The Steeler Way” is a BS concept more made up by the media and that I’ve never heard anyone from the Steelers use that term in print or any other media. I believe you responded John by saying something like ‘fair enough, but no one has ever refuted it either’ which is a ridiculous statement. When someone pays you a compliment, you normally don’t refute it! What the Steelers look like if they came out and said publicly “these comments to the Steeler Way are wrong, we’re no better than anyone else!”

Also, I’ve heard a lot on sports talk radio this past week that “if this was a backup tight end, he’d be cut like that” in reference to Ben’s status as a star player. How we forget the Steelers cut Bam Morris, their starting running back and huge part of that team leading up to Super Bowl XXX. That was the entire impetus of the trade that brought Jerome Bettis to town. So there is precedent of the team breaking ties with a franchise type player because of misconduct.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

The Steelers have benefitted from the perception…a well deserved one, for a long time…that they do things differently. I don’t remember If Morris had been arrested when he was released or simply accused. I do know that Tom Donahoe was in charge then and he had a lot less patience for this stuff than the current regime.

      • http://www.trojannation.net Kek

I believe Bam was cut after his guilty plea, for what it’s worth.

  • Doug

Innocent until proven guilty…unless you are writing a blog and trying to generate interest in your soon to be released book.

    Sad John, very sad.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Innocent until proven guilty IN A COURT OF LAW. They have a guy in federal custody who almost blew his testicles off with a bomb that he had in his underpants. iIs it OK if, as long as I’m not on a jury, I consider him guilty?

  • sammy

if the dude goes to the jail that will open a job up for someone else and that will help this nation’s unemployment percentage go down so who cares. the person who will get his job will be happy he goes to jail

  • Witzke

While I agree with your sentiment on Ben’s citizenship and feel he has an arrested case of maturity level for his age, I think you as a professional would hold more credibility if you left out the cuss-like name calling, i.e. “jackass,” used twice. And some vetting is needed of your suggestion that he may have been high on something other than alcohol. That’s a pretty serious charge. Where’s the substantiation?

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Once again, in most of the reports either the reporter or a witness pointed out that he didn’t appear to be drinking much. The fact that how much he may or may not have drunk was brought up is an indication that what may have caused his behavior was important to the discussion. If his level of intoxication is important, then the possibility that he could have been high on something else is not an accusation. It’s an observation.

I just wanted to say kudos to you for writing about Ben. I’ve always been a huge fan of this guy, but when I started to hear these stories a few years ago, I knew something wasn’t kosher. What I couldn’t figure out was why no one in the media was covering it. I commend what you’re doing.

  • http://twitter brandon belden

ben is a truly sad case. perhaps his celebrity won’t save him this time? if Mike Vick deserved 3 years for his sins, wouldn’t Ben deserve at least a decade? I just pray that justice is served for all women involving Ben, and that his karma and such are served nice and fresh……peace 🙂

    Hi John:

I just have to say this. I’m the mom of a girl around this girl’s same age who was raped by a relative of a well-known Pittsburgher a few years ago. I’m seeing all too many similarities in the story–the girl’s pain which has led to her dropping out of school, the eerily similar egotistical and self-obsessed behaviors (Big Blech could be his brother), and the supporters who will stand by him just because he’s a golden boy.

You have to wonder about a rapist who decides to park himself right next to the victim’s family for an hour, almost taunting them to lash out at him while waiting for a hearing. You have to wonder about parents of a rapist who will laugh when they look back and see your daughter collapsed on the ground after the charges are thrown out. That was OUR world.

Anyone who’s lived in Pittsburgh long enough knows what you’re saying is true. Thank God you didn’t have anyone breathing down your neck, and you were able to SAY it. You were the one to say what a great many knew or were thinking for so many years now–that this guy may be a heck of a ball player, but something’s not RIGHT about him as a human being.

Given the number of situations he gets into, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s done this more than twice. These two young women had the COURAGE to go after him, where other women may not have. My daughter had the courage to go after her rapist…did every single thing right…immediately called the police, immediately went to the hospital…but I have no doubt that the fix was in…and the $**#*$% got away with it.

That’s ok. I know that God’s watching, and isn’t happy. If Ben did this, and if he walks, we know what comes around goes around. Eventually God gives these people what they deserved, and didn’t get, in the first place. I hope that there will be justice if he really did do this.

May God be with this girl and his family. And PS, my daughter’s doing GREAT.

WIthout commenting on the current case, I can say that I believe with all my heart that nothing illegal happened in Las Vegas. Especially after the e-mails from his accuser where she bragged about having sex with him leaked. I’ll bet he did have sex with her, but at this point I find it hard to believe it wasn’t consensual.

      • Kat

The Vegas case, yeah, I think that was bullshit. The current one? I think there’s definitely something to it.

  • Ben fan

John, for starters, I’ve always appreciate you work. But, I have to argue this subject…….
The Yinzers kicked Bradshaw in the face, and were extremely critical, and even went to the extent and called him stupid. And, the man won 4 superbowls. Ben, a young man, and yes, sill making some poor choices. But, really, now yinzer nation is going to call for Dennis Dixon….lol. Sometimes I wonder who the real idiots are??? He hasn’t been convicted of anything, on either account. But, we will call him an ass, and talk about what a bad person he is. Do we get to air yours, mine or the rest of yinzer nation’s dirty laundry, and our mistakes? Don’t tell me how he makes 100mm. Don’t tell me about the understanding of what it means do be the Steelers QB and play for the Rooney’s and the Steelers. We all make mistakes; he owes nothing to anyone, but to his family and the Steeler organization. He has given the Steelers 2 superbowls and is the most winning QB up until this point for the Steelers. The Steelers are getting a nice return on their investment, so let’s not cry “100mm.” All of the yinzers that come out and tell you about their god awful experience with Ben, how about the yinzers that have good experiences? We just listen to the bad ones. We even go the extent and criticize him for wearing a shirt with a Devil logo on it, and we talk about how he looks overweight….Man, do we reach. I say let him live, and stop being so critical of him as a young man. Look at his complete body of work, both on and off the field, and let’s all enjoy the world championships that he will continue to bring us……

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

First, thanks for the kind words. But, sorry, I have to mention the $100 million. It’s that contract that means that Roethlisberger DOES owe the Rooney family the decency of representing the team in a positive manner. That means not building up an astronomical number of stories about how he abused people in public places and it means not having two sexual assault cases pending against him.

    • oksteelerfan

When you’re a high profile athlete and you continue to cause distractions for your team, the fans have a right to judge him. If he doesn’t like it, he can either quit being a distraction or hang up the cleats.
If he assaulted this girl, this girl’s life is more important than winning any football game including Super Bowls.
The Rooneys who are paying him millions every year deserve better and his fans deserve better.
The sad thing is if he was a cop, teacher or in many other professions he would have already lost his job.

      • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

        • D.

Look there have been no charges filed and no convictions made. Firing anyone (a cop, teacher, sportswriter or professional ballplayer) because of an allegation that has not been substantiated or appropriately vetted would be unfair. It would also set the employer up for a possible lawsuit. Let’s wait until the facts are in before passing judgment on Ben’s future as our QB. Let’s allow the investigative process to run its course and then we will know if Ben should remain or be let go.

          • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

If he’s not charged, the Steelers could still have justification for suspending him. If he’s charged he WILL be suspended.

          • D.

No question John that, if he is charged he is suspended….he needs to be…and if he is not charged he may still be suspended for his poor judgment in putting his team and teammates in such a poor light. That said, my point had to do wth Ben being fired. I can see two scenarios where he is suspended but not fired; 1) if he is not charged, and 2) if he is found innocent of assault if charged. We simply need to let the legal process run its course before anyone can say that he will be fired. That’s all I was saying. Thanks

          • Kat

Note: a court cannot declare one “innocent.” It’s either “guilty” or “not guilty.”

    • Eric

That is the problem…so many awful experiences and i have yet to hear a single good experience from the Yinzers. Oh unless we count the two super bowls then i guess we can count 2 (is that the point).

  • OneEyedBlindMan

Ben is just not real smart, that is what he is guilty of, regardless of sexual misconduct charges being filed or not filed in this episode. It is going to cost him more money to get out of this mess than if he would just takes his posse to Las Vegas and hire a professional for a week and have his fun. Next thing you know Ben is going to claim he is a sex addict, that seems to be the new excuse for wealthy sports jackasses that can’t seem to understand that sports is supposed to teach you values and morals at a young age. Usually the “stars” lose that lesson when they get entitlements to play.

Oh, and Ben didn’t win two Super Bowls, he was the member of two Super Bowl winning teams.

  • Brad

What a bunch of dumb Yinzers…If anyone thinks the Steelers should cut Big Ben, You all have got to be crazy! He is one of if not the best in the league.

Also need I remind you that these are just allegations against Ben he has never been charged in any case? It’s amazing to me how fast this city turns their backs on a hero. Remember this guy has single handled won us 2 Super Bowls. You really think Dennis Dixon is the answer need I remind you of the Kordell Stewart years….Well yinz are about to relive it, if the Steelers are stupid enough to cut the greatest since Bradshaw.

Good luck with you little blog.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

What if he’s guilty? Does he get a pass because of the two Super Bowls? He’s a great QB but he didn’t do anything singlehandedly except possibly damage his reputation forever. Thanks for the good wishes.

      • Brad

Right now he’s not guilty so lets stop passing judgment on the guy and stand behind him as we all should.

        • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Why should we stand behind him and not the girl who may have been assaulted?

          • Brad

Because the girl not from Pittsburgh and believe it or not most are crazy.

I usually agree with you, but not this time… Bottom line Ben uses poor judgment and yes I’m sick of his off the field issues but we have no facts that this actually happened.

          • oksteelerfan

So as long as he assaults a girl outside of Pittsburgh that’s okay? Most girls are crazy?
It’s awful crappy to me how so many male Steelers fans and even a few female Steelers fans want to trash a 20 year old kid just because they can’t deal with the fact there QB might actually be rapist at the worst and has zero respect for women at the least. But then men who say women are crazy and that’s why they accuse someone of assault probably don’t have much respect for women either.
I just hope some of this stuff I’ve read from Steelers fans regarding this girl don’t have daughters.

One thing not one person who keeps jumping on the lets defend Ben bandwagon ignore is why does any other QBs with the same target on their chest never get accused of sexual assault or rape even once much less twice?

          • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

            Bingo again.

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I don’t claim to know him. Here’s what I know. In 30 plus years ov covering sports in Pittsburgh, I have never had more people ask me why a certain player is a jackass (only they don’t use the word jackass) than I’ve had with this creep. I’d say it’s at least 10-1. Nothing I’ve said or written about him is based on how he treated me. He doesn’t know who I am. I haven’t said that I believed all the stories about him, either. I’ve mostly just commented on the huge number of people who, unsolicited, ask me why he’s such a jackass.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Thanks. One more story to add to a growing list. I can’t vouch for the veracity. I’m just passin’ ’em along.

  • Mike

    Hey, John.

I agree that Ben may be a jackass and a bad citizen. A lot of people in all walks of life are jerks. BUT, it ain’t illegal. Ben gets paid a lot of money to play football, and this he does very well. In fact, he may end up one of the best of all time Steeler history. He was instrumental in winning two Superbowls. He has performed on the field above and beyond anyone’s expectations for 6 years. And, a lot of folks in the media know Ben personally and says he’s a good guy off the field, too.

We all have our moments of being a jerk at one time or another – nobody’s perfect. When normal folks act like a jerk, we don’t get the event broadcast on TMZ. Stories of Ben being a jerk are just stories – they can’t be substantiated. Personal emails that tell of a so called encounter with a celebrity spread like gossip as the truth, but take any gossip story with a grain of salt. These second hand stories never end up being the whole truth.

Sexual assault is a pretty vague accusation – it could mean unwanted groping, exposing ones self, or rape. It could be that he put himself in a bad position – the wrong place at the wrong time. If he forced himself upon a woman, then he should pay a heavy price. But lets see how all this plays out. Right now, he hasn’t been charged with anything. A lot of maneuvering going on with lawyers. That’s it.

A lot of people are quick to make a knee jerk reaction about Ben being a lot more than just a jerk. People can think what they want, but whatever happened to benefit of the doubt and innocent until proven guilty? Let’s just wait and see. None of us know anything regarding the details of this case. Here’s an idea – let’s refrain from making rash decisions about something that we really don’t know anything about.

Great job on an awesome career, John.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

It’s the huge number of stories about this guy that makes it different. In 30 years I’ve never seen anything like it.l

  • Chad Weaver

That was a “Madden-like” entrance if I’ve ever seen one. That’s par for your course though Staggy, the king of originality. This is a great medium for you though. You can blast your ignorant opinions off without the camera showing your pouty face when someone disagrees with you. I’m not a Ben supporter, if he’s found guilty- he should be released within minutes of the verdict. Also, nice stache-1985 is over.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I’m pouting right now. You hurt my feelings.

  • http://twitter.com/kdruga Kayla

He’s becoming too much of a distraction at this point, but so was Jeff Reed, and look what the Rooney’s did with him. I’ve heard a million stories about what a player he thinks he is and think he’s just creepy and gross, but the man can throw a football. I don’t think his personal life should come into play when discussing his career UNLESS he really did assault that girl. If that’s the case, he should be cut. The whole situation sounds like he was being douchey and she didn’t want to put up with it.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I don’t know if being douchey is against the law. We’ll soon find out I guess.

    • http://www.piratespublic.com Nate

Agreed. If he’s guilty of sexual assault, I’m done with Ben Roethlisberger. I’ll even burn my jersey.

Generally, I don’t care whether a guy is nice or not off the field as long as they produce on the field. I’m a transplanted Pittsburgher to Indiana and I’ve heard some pretty crazy tales about Peyton Manning’s off-field behavior. But you know what? The guy can produce, and it the end that’s what he’s paid for.

But there’s a line. Just like I won’t buy a James Harrison jersey or cheer for him because he’s a wife beater, I will not cheer for Ben if the allegations are true.

      • wizzard

Just because a guy can produce on the field. does that give him a open season to commit crimes against women and drink like a lush. ?

This single blog has more insight than I’ve ever gotten from anyone in the Pittsburgh media. Thank you.

John– I’m relieved to see someone tell it like it is. Too often, I’ve seen people like Ed Bouchette ignore relevant stories…for example, why did he never report the real reason the Steelers cut Gary Russell? Isn’t that his job, to beat report? The facts were out there, but everytime Bouchette was asked in his Q/A on the PG website, he simply said Gary Russell was no Franco Harris. True, but he was hiding stuff for the sake of the Steelers. I know you’re not going to throw another media member under the bus, but I just want to say thank you for reporting the truth on Ben–no holds barred.

Also, I know of a few different bars in Pittsburgh where Ben is no longer welcome due to his walking out without paying a bill or mistreating the staff. Facts. Bad citizen.

Additionally, whomever wrote the article right after Ben was drafted about how he goes to the bars–but only drinks water!!!!–should be fired. I talked to someone who went to Miami of OH with him after that article came out, and he said it was the biggest b.s. story he had ever read.

  • Khalifa

mighty big man to rip some one on a blog…why don’t u say this to his face little man ???
if he did the crime, he should do the time..
2nd best steelers qb, behind your idol Kordell ???
nice to see a jackass like yourself throwing the very word out there often..Nothing like using Ben to promote your blog…can’t wait till the day we never have to hear from you again…won’t be soon enough.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Aw, come on. Tell me how you really feel.

    • http://www.piratespublic.com Nate

OK, come on. Say you have a boss that’s a complete idiot. You wouldn’t call your boss an idiot to their face. Doesn’t make it any less true.

  • John

He’s never been convicted of any sort of crime!!! This investigation is less then a week old, and already we’re ready to throw this guy under the bus!! I’m Just Tired of Jack ass People like this Dude John steigerwald or wherewaldo bad mouthing people for Stuff that has not been proven they dun yet. I mean come on now Dude How the hell do you no he blew off the Sick Kid and if Its true Hey Jack off Ben does have a life out of Football Jesus Christ dude get a fucking Life. By the Way this Shit will be Dropped because oh yea Bens Guards ar Off Duty PA Police they said they where in the Room Saw Nothing and Damn Why would been be willing to Give a DNa Test if he said he did nothing Give me a Break John go get a Life go play with your Self again and Say you don’t play with your self. And Do us all a Favor go talk about Something else and for all you Fake Steelers Fan that don’t stick By your Team and QB please leave and become a Eagles Fan. PS Fuck of John where is waldo

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Congratulations. That’s the most poorly written post so far.

    • oksteelerfan

And those same off duty police lawyered up as well. I don’t think just because they’re off duty cops makes them innocent nor does it make their word the truth. They’re going to have to cover their behinds as well. The information that is out there now looks as if they were in the company of underage drinking and even one witness who says they were guarding the bathroom door.

As for us fake Steelers fans, most of us were Steelers fans long before Ben was born and we’ll be Steelers fans long after Ben is gone. When you grow up and quit having heroes you’ll learn that players come and go and teams somehow manage to go on without them.

    • Kat

“Fake Steelers Fan?” I stick by my team. Which is why I don’t like the idea that Ben is giving it a bad name.

The Steelers are more than one player. Being a fan doesn’t mean supporting a potential criminal. And even if he didn’t do what he’s accused of, it has been confirmed that he’s an asshole.
And John, my cousin’s wife is a doctor at Children’s and she can INDEED vouch for him refusing to come in for MaW requests. One girl had to be told outright that the guy was an asshole. How horrid can you get?

On the other hand, she will tell you that Troy Polamalu is the exact opposite of Ben.

      • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

One more story for the pile.

  • Tom

John, Agree with you 100 percent. Also ran into a girl I knew who said Ben did a similar thing in Monroeville here last summer at a bar, and with an entourage. When she blew him off he became beligerent. Problem was, she had a big boyfriend with her who didn’t give a rats ass that he was Ben. Way to speak the truth. Got a reader for life. My dad is an attorney and said that these cases are hard to prove, meaning the girl in Georgia’s words should hold true. If that is the case, he should get the max of four years and learn his lesson.

  • aa

Big Ben is my fantasy QB in a keeper league so I hope this all blows over.

  • Ellen

I do not but I bet my sisters do!!!

  • Siggy

    Here’s a classy comment.

    How this John?

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Ah, yes my brother Paul’s Hobey Baker comment. Let me see if I have this right. You can make jokes about Mrs. Lincoln enjoying the play and Seinfeld can do an entire episode making fun of he Zapruder film, but Hobey Baker, a guy who died 90 years ago, is off limits? What’s the statute of limitations on hockey players? Is it longer than the one on dead presidents?

      • Siggy

Point being, you want to talk about other people hold your brother to the same standards. That was a sick and tasteless joke.

Why didn’t KDKA ever comment about Hines Ward’s divorce? Where were you then Mr. High and Mighty? It’s not a secret in Pittsburgh than Hines ran around chasing skirt while married with a small child.

Or was the fact that Hines worked in KDKA’s studio’s during the season the reason why you shut up?

Any intelligent media member in Pittsburgh would know that the “Steeler Way” is PR spin BS.

        Remember these former Steelers John?

        Eric Green?

        Donnell Woolford?

        Bill Johnson?

        Ernie Holmes?

How about current Steelers who are not quarterbacks like James Harrison, and Santonio Holmes?

Where are you whining about them being employed by this team?

Oh that’s right, they aren’t the quarterback who won two rings while your hero Kordell couldn’t.

Kordell’s gone John. You’re obsession with Ben is as bad as Bob Smizik’s infatuation with Mark Madden.

        • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I’ve criticized every player you’ve mentioned. I’ve asked why guys like Harrison who beat up women aren’t shunned by their teammates. A player’s private life is his private liefe. Being accused of or sued for sexual assault ain’t private. Only a moron would compase a divorce to aan alleged sexual assault. My brother shouldn’t have said what he said about Hobey Baker. It wasn’t that big a deal. Ever heard anybody say, “Other than that Mrs Lincoln, how id you like the play”? Were you deeply offended? Get over it.

        • PittMan

Wow, so you’re going to compare a one time on air faux pas to the constant rude and crude behavior of a multi-million dollar pro QB? Haha, nice try. I’d hardly rank Paul’s mistake up there in the all time on-air screw ups. Ben on the other hand . . .

        • Sean

I’m confused. Does some mildly offensive comment by Paul Steigerwald somehow make Roethlisberger a better person? Same goes for Ward, Harrison, Holmes, et. al. — these are all pathetic attempts at deflecting attention from one simple truth… John Steigerwald is right on this one. Your arguments are purely straw man.

#7 for the Steelers has been a very bad citizen since he first put on a uniform. On his best day, he’s an absolute jerk to anyone with whom he interacts. He treats women terribly, and he still thinks he’s a college frat boy. Say what you want about anyone else, but it doesn’t put #7 in a better light.

          • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

            Right on, brother.

      • http://www.piratespublic.com Nate

Time and a place. If you’re at a bar, the Hobey Baker joke is hilarious. If you’re a comedian, it’s funny because we expect our comedians to be controversial. If you’re the broadcaster of a hockey game, it’s uncalled for and unprofessional to say it during the game.

  • CharlestonFan

As a media member in Charleston, SC (where Ben owns some business venture) I’ve been privy to his behavior for quite some time. It was best explained to me a few years back (after the first Super Bowl win) by a good friend who works at a restaurant he co-owns.

They played beer pong together that night. She said she beat him at beer pong (which I found somewhat amusing) and said he was, quote, “Wearing a douchey pink shirt and hitting on some skanky blonde. I wasn’t impressed.”

I’ve known this girl long enough to trust her opinion and had no doubt of her assessment but always regarded him as “my douchebag” because he won Super Bowls and being from Carnegie, I was damn proud of my team. He came back in later and asked for her specifically to be his waitress and she still came away unimpressed with him.

I did have a moment of hesitation after the Vegas allegations but after this incident it seems to me with zero doubt that what he’s accused of is the truth. It’s a damn shame because if he had his head on his shoulders and took care of himself he could be stellar.

From all indications from his last visit to Charleston (a week or two before these latest allegations) he is far from taking care of himself. He was weeks shy of 28 and upstairs in the VIP area of his restaurant and once again playing beer pong. And multiple people whom encountered him said they “weren’t impressed” and were shocked by “how fat he was”.

His being cut of not may not be the determining factor in whether he remains the quarterback of the Steelers at this rate. His abuse of his own body may do him in long before any legal charges or NFL higher ups strike first. If he insists on abusing himself and cutting his career short, so be it. He could have been so much more and his personality wont be missed.

Glad to see you’re reaching out in some medium, John. I enjoyed your news casts when I’d make my way up to the ‘Burgh to visit my grandparents. Keep up the good work.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Good stuff. Thanks for the kind words.

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Thanks. Do you remember Sister Cecelia?

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

That would be OK with me but it doesn’t work if he’s in prison. Thanks for the kind words

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Tell your son to try number 43.

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Lynn Swann is the only name that surprises me there. Bill Cowher was known to blow off people in the Steelers office.

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I said he was a bad guy a year and a half ago on KDKA radio.

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Bob Nutting is a smart business man. Ben may be a sex offender. Get some perspective, please.

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

He has amassed an unbelievable amount of bad impressions in a very short time. Bad Citizen.

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

You may be right. Of course, none of that can happen if he’s in prison and that’s where he’ll be if he’s charged and convicted. I realize that’s a long way from where we are right now.

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I’m little and I could be a weasel, but I was never ignored by Ben. However low Ben is right now. he got there all by himself. I have no sympathy for him. He is a great QB and a bad guy.

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Thanks for the kind words. Not being a nice guy and having two possible sexual assault cases pending against you are two very different things. You can’t win a Super Bowl if you’re wearing an orange jumpsuit.

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Ben has created 10 times as many unsolicited “what’s wrong with this guy” comments than any player I”ve covered in over the 30 years. Great quarterback. Bad Citizen.

    • The_Game

Tom Barasso was like that too, wasn’t he?

      • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

He was no prize. Ben leads him 2-0 in sexual assault accusations, though.

  • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I just raised the possibitlity. Ben’s a great QB, second best in franchise history, but the Rooneys have claimed that they’re different and don’t tolerate this stuff. They can do what they want, but they can’t keep Ben and keep making the claim.

    • Bill

Well, there was that ridiculous justification of James Harrison’s spousal abuse, “taking the baby to get baptized”.

Keep up the good work, John…who else will go after the “sacred cows” of Pittsburgh sports?

      • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

        • Emma

Okay John…You seem to have an inside track; ; Has Ben always been this way? Belligerent? Arrogant?

Ben was the reason I became a fan of the Steelers again. This is a “kid” who had WWJD on his shoes (unless the J stood for John Elway).

I have a black and white photo of him ‘squatting somewhat meditatively’ on the field before his first game after the motorcycle accident where he seemed to be genuinely thankful (to God?) that he was alive and playing.

This is a guy who had to rush home for his sister’s graduation.

So, my question is this. What the hell happened ? Too much fame? too much money?, too many concussions (brain damage can cause personality change)? Where is Ben’s family in all of this. Does no one have his ear?

I am NOT saying Ben the victim here. I’m a woman with daughters. But I just can’t comprehend how he could change so drastically.

P.S. To those who “worry; about Crosby. No need to. First, he’s Canadian and there just so wonderfully polite. Second, he has Mario who has done an excellent job of warning him about fame and the negative consequences. Sid will be just fine.

Wish that that entire Steeler team could be made up of men with the integrity of Charlie Batch and Troy Polamalu.

          • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I have no idea. It’s too bad.

          • Mike O

it will be interesting to see how the Rooney family responds to this especially if criminal charges are brought forward. I would hope that the Rooney family would deal with this situation and any other with consistency and fairness. I agree taht a players personal life is his own yet some behaviors or potential crimes are something more than that. Super Bowl’s don’t overshawdow character in my book. Thanks for being honest John and keep on blogging.

          • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Nobody’s denying that he ever did charity work. It’s just that it looks more and more like the bad far outweighs the good.

          • SteelerSam

Nothing happened it is all nasty rumors

I actually had the chance to meet Ben a couple of times through a mutual friend that played football with Ben at Miami. Ben always was polite and very down to Earth. He seems very guarded against strangers, but once he got to know me he joked and messed around like we were old friends. I even have a photo on my camera phone of Big Ben giving me a noogie. He’s a big kid and it’s very easy to forget that he is a star because he acts like an average Joe. The guy adores his sister and is always at her games supporting her. Doesn’t sound like something a jerk would bother to do.

I’ve never seen him show off or act like he was better than anyone. He picked up the tab everywhere we went. I keep hearing how he skips on the bill at restaurants but when we stopped to grab something to eat at a BW-3 he slipped two $100 bills on the table as we walked away. I think the tab was only $30 and I joked that he should have given me the extra $100 bill. My friend always tells me how Ben is overly generous with all his friends, especially the Steelers linemen and Brett Kiesel, his best friend on the team.

I keep hearing all these stupid rumors that his teammates hate him and don’t respect him and that is flat out BS. Kiesel is known as one of the highest characters on the Steeler team. I can’t see him hanging out with a serial jerk as John seems to claim. Same goes with Heath Miller and Troy Polamalu, two players that Ben is very close to. Do you think high character players like Miller and Polamalu would be friends with a “jerk?” Ben is first to defend his Oline and often times gives them credit when they clearly don’t deserve it. After the SB win against the Cardinals, Ben hoists up the Lombardi and what is the first thing he says “how do they like you now Oline?”

From everything I’ve ever seen of Big Ben I will never believe that he is guilty of any kind of assault. People here’s a newsflash, Ben doesn’t need to force himself on some random girl at a bar…there are plenty of famous women that have expressed interested in him.

It’s been over a year since I got to hang out with my friend when Big Ben is around but I doubt that he suddenly turned into an ass. Here’s my take, you have a lot of people out there that act like morons when they see someone famous. When the famous person then turns around and refuses to give an autograph or pose for a photo then they become “jerks.” Need proof, remember the now infamous YouTube clip of Bill Cowher vacationing on the beach with his wife. Some douche bag walks up with a camcorder and starts bothering them while they sat there minding their own business. You can see Cowher trying to be a good sport but the jackass doesn’t know when to stop and starts poking fun at Cowher and his wife. How could anyone blame Cowher if he ripped the camcorder from the idiot’s and whipped it into the ocean. If he did do that or tell the clown to F off, Cowher suddenly becomes the bad guy, right?

Same thing goes for Big Ben or any other celebrity. I wasn’t there but my buddy tells me how he’s been with Ben at dinner and girls will jump out and start snapping photos while he tries to eat dinner. He told me how women then flip him the bird when he doesn’t smile for the picture and make fun of him. He also told me how two guys wearing Steeler gear followed them one day as they were leaving a shopping mall. The one guy whips out a mini Steeler helmet and starts yelling for Ben to sign it. Ben refuses, like he always does with adults asking to sign stuff because he figures it most likely ends up on eBay. As Ben pulls out the one guy stats calls him a fag for refusing to sign the helmet and spits on the driver side window of his Escalade.

So now, you tell me who’s the jerk? Don’t believe 99% of what you hear out there people. I think there are a lot of people like the one’s described above, they act like animals and then when a celebrity blows them off it is the celebrity that’s the bad guy. Ben IS a good guy and I wouldn’t believe any of these negative rumors unless you personally see them.

So tell me John, what happened…did Ben refuse to sign your BigBen Fathead and now you find him to be a jerk???

          • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Great post. Two things: For the 1,000th time, Ben never snubbed me or anybody I know in any way. My opinion of him is based on the huge volume of questions I got from people about why he is an _________. Also, I couldn’t agree more with you about the fans. I discount any story about an athlete being rude to an autograph seeker. Unless they are kids who haven’t been sent by their parents. Fans need to understand that pro athletes, movie stars, celebrities owe them nothing. Fans need to back off when a Steeler is out in public. No matter who it is. Leave the guy alone and get a life.

          • wyckoff

funny, they wouldn’t post my other response. Steigerwald, you got more issues then Ben does, that’s for sure ! get a grip, man ! You’re a unhappy, selfish &#*((*#@$ !!! get a life, would ya ?

          • JMS55

I am so glad to hear/read about what type of person Ben really is. My son is active military and was at Heinz Field for a flyover, Ben and Santonio were both on the field warming up. Ben throwing balls and Santonio running along the sideline. Ben thru a ball to my son, my son caught it and Ben came over, shook his hand, thanked him for his brave service, and posed for picture that was taken by my son’s friend on his camera phone. My son took that picture off of his buddies camera and transferred to his laptop and uses it as his desktop. After that, Ben had Heath Miller, Brett Kiesel and Hines Ward come over to shake my sons and his buddies hand. A very classy act. This is gameday, they have other things on their minds but Ben and the rest of the players were simply the best.
I have a very hard time believing as you do, that Ben did this terrible thing. I just wish everyone should not be his judge and jury. These so called righteous purists probably have alot of skeletons in their closet t hat they don’t want to get out. Those who are with sin should not cast the first stone.
My heart and prayers are with Ben and his family.
I’m tired of all this b/s that this jackbutt Steigerwald is writing about Ben because Ben refused an interview because of the jackbutt he is. He’s nothing but a sensationalistic tabloid writer and wants to capitalize on someone else’s misfortune. (notice I didn’t call him a journalist).
BEST OF LUCK, BEN. I’m pulling for you.!!!

          • wizzard

Emma. The problem with the so called christians in sports today, is its all showboating. If they truly believed in Lord like they demonstrate, they wouldnt have all these off field problems…Its so funny to see someone bless themself on the field or point to the heavens, and then on the next play, the claim to have caught a ball that hit the ground. If they were truly in the graces of the Lord, they would stand up and say, hey, dont waste your time with instant replay, i really didnt catch it. There are just too many phoneys that are using the Lord for their benefit. Oh, and that wwjd on his shoes, means we want jack daniels…

          • wyckoff

Oh, get a GRIP !!! now you’re bashing the guys for having some faith ??? “graces of the lord”, OH MY GOD!!! It’s absolutely NONE of your business how or where or when these guys want to show thier appreciation to GOD ! God understands how anyone wants to ‘thank him’ , whether YOU , almighty wizzard, likes it or NOT ! go to blazes !!!

          • wizzard

If ur gonna use the Lord, then do it all they way…. not just when it fits ur needs.

          • wizzard

P.S. you cant be very close to the Lord if you are out drinking like a fish and entering womens restrooms with bad intentions… come on man. I dont think the Lord would be proud of good ole ben…..wonder if he blessed himself and pointed to the heavens before he entered the womans restroom? A nice show of faith there booby ben

          • Effie

Wizzard !! I can’t believe you or anyone would ever go to the length as to decide who the ‘Lord’ loves ! I think you need to go and read your bible ! If you have one ! That’s just the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard anyone say! oh my !! ” Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us ” . You’re a sick puppy, Wizzard ! and I suggest you figure out your ‘walk in life’ and not worry about how God is looking after the rest of his children !

          • http://justwatchthegame John Patrick

Are all you guys back in the bandwagon now since you are back in the Super bowl? It never ceases to amaze me that this reporter acts like a primma-donna because Ben does not give him the time. There is a reason why you write about it because you cannot play it and probably a loser growing up and got beat by quarterbacks like Ben. Steelers don’t need you losers and you can bring your 247 fans to Mexico with Fedrico and leave Pittsburgh.

          • Emma

May I suggest that we don’t blanket condemn people. There are Christians who are sincere who also play professionally.

I gave two examples in my original posts. I’ll stick with Troy for right now however. I do not believe that even his (Troy’s) own teammates or players from other teams can find fault with the character of Polamalu.

So not all athletes who are Christians and profess to be so are necessarily putting on a “show.”

Also, I’ll add that I am not “finding Ben guilty” other than of poor judgement at this moment. I’ll let the legal system handle (or mishandle?) that.

P.S. Dear “Wykoff’ I shall pray for your sorry soul! How can you believe that “producing on the field” allows someone to commit crimes against anyone, let alone women. You must be a very sad and lonely individual.

          • Kat

Lots of people have claimed to be good Christians and yet to turned out to be complete asshats. Doesn’t mean anything.

    • The_Game

Well, they did keep Jerome Bettis after the accusations against him. They did keep James Harrison and he admitted in his book that he punched a woman. Santonio’s been doing all kinds of drugs, but they won’t let him go.

I think all sports teams are alike…if you’re a superstar, they’re going to keep you around. If you’re a 3rd stinger, you’re probably gone.

  • benlikestheladies

so who’s the biggest jerk in your time covering pit sports, ben, barry b or barrasso, or someone else.

  • Dan Frost

    Dear John,

Glad to see you’ll be blogging. I’ve always enjoyed your opinions, and I was sorry when your talk show with KDKA was cancelled.

I totally agree with your take on Roethlisberger. I work at the Baierl Family YMCA where he’s a member, and I’ve heard from many people what a jerk he is, and how terribly he treats people. He does need to be knocked off his high horse.

At the very least he’s a fool for putting himself in such a compromising situation, in light the recent allegation of sexual misconduct in Las Vegas. At worst, he’s a criminal who should serve time. Maybe that’s what he needs to get his mind right.

This must be extremely embarrassing for the Rooneys. They’re Catholic, and this type of behavior brings shame on them and the whole organization. It’s hard to believe Roethlisberger doesn’t understand that. He’s obviously very immature, and needs to grow up.

  • MN_PittMan

Wow, I’ve been living in the clouds when it comes to Big Ben! I starting to think Hostage is right! Maybe the Steelers should cut him now, so that they can move on (Dennis Dixon?).

Congrats on the blog John! I have always enjoyed your work!

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Ben is not a nice guy. Thanks for the kind words.

      • http://www.piratespublic.com Nate

The Pirates are full of nice guys. How do you feel about them as a team?

  • desmo900

There has been murmurs among fans for years about what a jackass this guy is. Kudos for you for slaughtering the sacred cow and having the courage to say something publicly. We can all be die-hard Steelers fans AND still recognize what an idiot this guy really is. GO STEELERS!

  • bru

Hey John, as a fellow SHC grad, welcome to the wild world of electronic publishing in da ‘burgh! … and after reading your post re: Big Ben one wonders “what do you really think of him?”

Keep on telling it as you see it — we sportsfans will be better off for the effort.

p.s. Good luck with the book.

    Hello John!

Welcome to the Blogosphere. – I am a long time admirer of your work and look forward to following your blog.

I am of the opinion that this is the beginning of the end of the Roethlisberger era in Pittsburgh. Ben has proven too many times he lacks the character and integrity necessary to serve as the face of the Pittsburgh Steelers or warrant a $100M investment.

Ben’s continued indiscreations, combined with his increasing salary the next few years, and this unique uncapped year present a unique window for the Rooney’s to unload this guy and allow him to become another club’s burden in a way that does not yield problematic salary cap implications.

My prediction is that no later than 9/1/2011, Ben will not be employed by the Steeler organization.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Thanks for the kind comments. I wouldn’t be surprised if your prediction came true.

    • Chris

What burden are you talking about? The guy has won 2 Superbowls!! He’s never been convicted of any sort of crime!!! This investigation is less then a week old, and already we’re ready to throw this guy under the bus!! How about instead of losing our minds and crucifying a guy who, to this point, hasn’t done anything wrong (except make stupid decisions), we wait until we have all of the facts. Because right now this constant bashing is getting really old.

      • http://www.timelesssoul.com Glen S.

Those of you that think just because Big Ben has won 2 SB’s makes it so he can do anything he wants and be the jerk he is are silly and you and him need to wake quick!

Big Silly Ben needs a good beat down by his teammates before someone defending these women he’s attacking KILLS him DEAD! Wake up stupid ass Ben… People don’t play that anymore!

        • http://www.piratespublic.com Nate

I’d like to remind you that Ben has yet to have his day in court regarding this case. In the American legal system, people are innocent until proven guilty. And for my part, I’m not saying that he did it or didn’t do it until after the trial. Not after what happened to the Duke lacrosse team.

          • oksteelerfan

People are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law not in the court of public opinion.
When you start a pattern of back to back years of being accused of sexual assault, public opinion is going to start questioning what is wrong with this guy?
