THE ULTIMATE GRAND SLAM

Think of all the Major League Baseball Games that have been played in the last 110 years or so.

And consider consider that Rajai Davis of the Tigers did something last night that has only happened 27 times. He hit a grand slam home run to wipe out a three run deficit and end the game.

It’s called an ultimate grand slam.

Two Pirates have done it. And they did it within two months of each other.

Danny Kravitz in May of 1956 and Roberto Clemente in July of 1956.

Both happened in Forbes Field and I was there to see them. I was 7 years old.

Clemente’s was even more rare. It was inside the park. He’s the only player to do it. And it’s not possible for a game to have a more exciting ending.

Those are two of my earliest sports memories and the Clemente home run is the subject of the first chapter of my book.

FOX NETWORK’S BASEBALL RATINGS STINK

The NHL’s not the only non-football league that is struggling to get big national TV ratings.

The ratings for Fox’s “Baseball Night in America” are in the toilet.

Of course, the low ratings are not a good measure of baseball’s popularity because the Fox game was competing with local telecasts all over the country.

Unlike NBC’s “Football Night in America”, or ESPN’s Monday Night Football, which have all the football fans to themselves.

There was a time when the NBC Saturday Game of the Week was a pretty big deal. That was before teams televised so many games on local TV. And before the Pirates televised any home games.

If the Pirates were playing at home on a Saturday, you had two choices if you wanted to see a Major League Baseball game.

You could buy a ticket to the Pirates game or watch Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek on NBC.

And the NBC Game of the Week was your only chance to see an American League team.

Now, national network hockey and baseball games aren’t much more than wallpaper for the sports bars.

ARE STEROID USERS CHEATERS

Does taking PEDs to improve your athletic performance amount to cheating?

I never had a strong opinion on the subject.

Now I do.

Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated makes the case by showing how players who decided to stay clean during baseball’s steroid era were cheated.

As I read this piece…which is ridiculously well written, by the way… I couldn’t help remembering the conversation I had with Dr. Charles Yesalis, the steroids expert from Penn State, a couple of weeks ago.

He said he finds references to MLB’s post-steroid era “hilarious” and says that he believes PED use in MLB is still rampant.

I also couldn’t help thinking about the NFL and how the culture must still be a lot like MLB’s  drug culture of 10 or 12 years ago described by Verducci.
