Many years ago Mad Magazine would run cartoons called something like “What if they had different jobs?”. One that I remember had Paul Williams ( there’s a c list celebrity) working at a butcher shop and all the customers were repulsed by him.

It’s fun to think of Ben as an unemployed bagger at Giant Eagle, though.

As a side note, while I don’t have a problem with player salaries, I think back to last year where the Wall Street Journal wrote a piece on how long it takes athletes to make $100,000. For instance A-rod SEES 6 pitches to earn that- whether he swings or not. Well, Big Ben makes $100,000 after taking 3.9 SNAPS. That kind of money (power) attracts a lot of attention.

If Ben the Bagger made $100,000 for every 3.9 bags of groceries he did, people would probably pay more attention.

Or it could simply mean Pig Ben’s attorney is trying to negotiate a financial settlement with the alleged victim to make it all go away. Tony B. will be relieved if that happens, too. It doesn’t change my view of Pig Ben. though. The Steelers and the fine city of Pittsburgh do not deserve this stain. Until he is gone, my chrome license plate border will remain upside down. And I will be a fan of every team that plays the Steelers in the meantime, cheering when Pig Ben is sacked (damn hard, I hope).

Things are getting interesting. According to ESPN, bar owner Rocky Duncan says a bodyguard stood outside the restroom while Roethlisberger and the intoxicated coed were inside. The bodyguard would not allow the coed’s friends inside the restroom to check on her welfare.
Sounds as though the filing of charges is fast approaching.

You wouldn’t be making an unsubstantiated accusation, would you?

I wonder if all the support for Ben would exist if he was a bagger at Giant Eagle. I’m not so sure my employer would have kept me around after the first accusation. But, there’s two different standards for people in this country and the treatment you receive is unfortunately based upon wealth/fame.

I could care less if my star quarterback is playing with an ankle monitoring bracelet attached to him if he is leading us to victory. This half-way moral Steeler fan could care less if his players meet his personal code of conduct.

I just watch the darn game!

That sounds like a good title for a book. Do you have any kids?

I couldn’t agree more with Chris! I’m an avid Steeler fan but if Ben is taking snaps while waiting for the proceedings to start, I will have lost faith in the Rooney’s.

I’m in the “Ben is an ass and needs to grow up” camp but I’m also in the “innocent until proven guilty” camp. If there is no “physical evidence” and no witnesses, it is going to be a he said/she said deal and most likely an out of court cash settlement with no criminal charges.

No criminal charges may not “un-tarnish” Ben in a lot of people’s minds but to me it will (in this specific case, not his being an overall Jackass but I can live with a Jackass quarterback much more than I can with a sexual predator quarterback and I think the Steelers can as well.) “Accused vs. convicted” are two massively different things when it comes to multimillionaire athletes. Remember that Jerome Bettis was a accused rapist.

My only problem is that Ben doesn’t seem like he is smart enough to learn the lesson if he gets out of this situation relatively “Scott free.” (see: Still riding without a helmet after smashing face and almost dying) If he is 100% innocent, I think he will continue to put himself into situations where he can be accused and as we see here, even though the first accusation was almost certainly a money grab, a second accusation “layers” on with the other one to create a “where there’s smoke, there must be fire” situation.

He has admitted having sexual contact with the woman. Who needs DNA?

      • Darren

I didn’t think of that. I guess that isn’t as big of a deal as I thought then. Still, I still go by ‘innocent until proven guilty”. Sure, he’s proven to be a dumb-ass punk, but that does not equal guilty. Everyone publicly convicted the Duke Lacrosse team based on the media reports.

I still predict this will be settled out of court with no criminal charges. That won’t mean he is innocent either, but I hope he is and he didn’t force himself on a young girl.

If it looks like a trial is ahead do you think the Raiders would give up 2 #1 picks? I don’t see the Rooney’s keeping him but I don’t see them just releasing him either.

I can’t imagine that Dan Rooney WOULDN’T want to get rid of him right now, but he’s not stupid. Imagine what it’s like for him. It’s not just that he’s the owner of a compnay (The Steelers) whose most visible employee has been accused of sexual assault. He’s the US Ambassador to Ireland. How long would someone on his staff in Ireland last under similar circumstances. Every day for the foreseeable future Dan is going to have to see Steelers and sexual assault in the same sentence. I don’t claim to know Dan well, but I think I know enough ABOUT him to know that he would love to come up with a way to get rid of this guy as painlessly as possible.

Gotta love the Pittsburgh media. I know many of them are probably your friends and colleagues but the impression I’ve gotten from most of them is they’ll take any little speck of evidence they can find if it gives them a chance to scream out “Look! Ben is innocent after all! Steeler fans rejoice!”

It’s like Stan Savran on ESPN radio going on and on about how even if charges are filed, the proceedings won’t start until November so at least the Steelers will have Ben this season. Does he honestly think any half-way moral Steeler fan wants a guy awaiting trial as a sexual predator taking snaps this season?

I’ve never seen such a disconnect between the way the media is covering a story and how the average fan feels about it.
