Roethlisberger VS Arnold Palmer

This is another one of the many stories I’ve heard about Roethlisberger.  It involves a guy you probably don’t want to mess with. Again, take it for what it’s worth. It was emailed to me and was linked at profootballtalk.com.

Time for a thread update, looks like…

To all you people who swallowed this fairy tale as fact, congratulations. Now maybe you can start questioning if all those other Ben stories are bunk, too?

And to the blogger who couldn’t WAIT to post this, then later lied about having posted it in the first place — way to get exposed bud! You’re really morally qualifed to rag on others for their bad behavior.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Yeah. It was all a bunch of lies. Wear that #7 jersey proudly, Jake.

  • KCS

Steigerwald, I looked forward to reading your blog once I heard you were starting it – now I cannot remember why.

You’ve posted numerous one-sided stories about Ben Roethlisberger, even though many of them are either obviously false or highly speculative.

Understandably, this is your blog and you are going to post your opinions. So, it follows that will you post information that you think solidifies your opinion. I just don’t understand why you think it is fair to tell readers to make their own judgments of Roethlisberger based on the things you post when you are only posting selective unreliable pieces of information; it appears you are trying to mislead people.

If you are going to act like this blog is an accurate way for a reader to make a judgment on a person’s character, then don’t provide exclusively negative stories. If you’re going to tell people you’re just giving your opinion, then it seems ridiculous to expect readers to make a worthwhile judgment on anything other than your ability to obtain your opinions.

I do not think Ben Roethlisberger has many admirable qualities outside of football, but it would seem he still might have more than you.

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

Obviously false? Check out my post from yesterday on the blog called “In defense of Ben”. I’ve written and said many times and in many places that I wouldn’t trade him for any other QB in the league. Now, I would trade him for a high draft pick and a solid NFL backup QB. I definitely wouldn’t want a creep like him being the face of my organization. Feel free to list what you consider his admirable qualities. You can call me John, by the way.
      Thanks
      Steigerwald

      • Jake Ryan

Yep, “obviously false” is right John — time to own up to how wrong you were, bud.

        • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

That wasn’t my story. Nice try, though.

  • Bobby

Hey, did you hear? Ben was on the grassy knoll that fateful day.

  • Bobby

If these super star athletes complied with every charity and autograph request, they would never have time to play football.

  • BURGHBOY

I think this is far fetched too. I can buy the jerk comments, obviously he has poor judgment, and will know more when the facts come out on the possible charges. If he is guilty, he deserves a smackdown from the commish (and fellow W&J grad) Goodell.

Then again, would I bet my house on it not being true? Nope.

  • Duke76

So Ben acted the fool at one of Mr. Palmer’s courses after December 2008? Of course you do not know and do not care – no surprise peddling your memoirs online and writing this blog is pretty much your link to journalism these days

As I stated in a link earlier tonight (which you refused to post), even Florio at PFT is backing away from the Arnold Palmer story

Source: Roethlisberger’s Arnold Palmer rumors are false
    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/15/source-roethlisbergers-arnold-palmer-rumors-are-false/

In that same comment which you refused to post, I provided the link to Ed Bouchette, who actually covers the Steelers, knocking down several weeks ago the rumors of a Palmer-Roethlisberger confrontation

Turtle Creek Ted: Hi Ed……..I have heard from several reliable sources (take that for what it is worth) that Big Ben requested to play golf at one of Arnold Palmer’s courses in Latrobe or Ligonier. The story that has been shared is that Ben was extremely rude to the people there and did damage to the course. Arnie was at the course at the time and “supposedly” informed Ben after the round that he will never be invited to another of Arnie’s courses and that informed him that he (Ben) is in a position of responsibility and should not be acting in the manner in which he did. Can you confirm/deny the story and if this is the case any reason it hasn’t been mentioned in the papers, etc?

Ed Bouchette: This is one of those urban (suburban?) legends that will not die even though the PG has privately discredited it.

Keep up the scurrilous work – at this rate you will draw a libel suit by the end of March

  • Arnold Palmer

That story is bogus. They missed the part where I threw him a couple jabs and then gave him a swirly! Then I said, “I own this town, pal! I own this town!” Then I told him that John Steigerwald is my bestest friend forever!!!!

  • Matt

Make sure you link to the profootballtalkcom post that says it is bullshit.

  • Bobby

What’s the next Ben story going to be? That he was cutting out and selling people’s kidneys?

  • Duke76

My personal view is that Mr. Roethlisberger has a well deserved reputation, based on the facts, for being an arrogant, rude person. If he assaulted the young woman in Milledgeville he should serve time in jail.

But that should not justify the efforts of a has been sportscaster looking for way to pay the bills by joining “this blogging thing” to just toss unsubtantiated nonsense out there

In the spirit of piling on that characterizes how Mr. Steigerwald operates his blog, here is a quote from Mr. Palmer himself about Mr, Roethlisberger in an interview published on December 25, 2008:

Have you ever golfed with any current or former Steelers players or coaches?
I have played with quite a few of them. I played with Terry Bradshaw and a couple of coaches, including Bill Cowher. I played with Ken Whisenhunt who is out in Arizona now and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau. I played with both of them on the same day. I also played with Ben Roethlisberger. I think they are all pretty good golfers. Ben was outstanding. He did a great job and I enjoyed it very much.

    http://news.steelers.com/article/101165/

Yep – this confirms that Mr. Palmer really cannot stand Mr. Roethlisberger

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

That was then. This is now.

      • Jake Ryan

And this is now, May 27 2010. The story has officially been debunked. Ben just played with Gulbis on Arnie’s course. Way to look the fool again, Steigerwald!

        • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I wrote–“take it for what it’s worth”. The fact that so many people were so quick to believe that story tells you all you need to know about what a jackass Roethlieberger was for 5 years.

  • Bobby

This is not true, Bouchette looked into the story and found it to be false. Steigy really scraping the bottom of thye barrel.

  • Duke76

Yet another case of John Steigerwald just throwing stuff out there on his blog to gather page hits – why verify what might have happened as opposed to just passing s**t along?

    The story of Ben being dressed down by Arnold Palmer has been around for a while. Ed Bouchette, who actually covers the Steelers, addressed the alleged event several weeks ago in his online chat;

Hi Ed……..I have heard from several reliable sources (take that for what it is worth) that Big Ben requested to play golf at one of Arnold Palmer’s courses in Latrobe or Ligonier. The story that has been shared is that Ben was extremely rude to the people there and did damage to the course. And the Palmer story is so bogus even John’s new best friend Mike Florio at PFT is backpedaling

Posted by Mike Florio on March 15, 2010 6:31 PM ET
With rampant rumors making the rounds regarding some type of an unpleasant exchange between Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and gold legend Arnold Palmer, a source close to Roethlisberger says that the rumors “couldn’t be further from the truth.”

Per the source, Roethlisberger and Palmer have met twice, and they have played together at Arnold’s club, the Latrobe Country Club.

“It was awesome,” Roethlisberger said of his golf outing with Palmer in 2008. “It was Arnold and I on a team against [the late] Coach [Terry] Hoeppner and Spider Miller. We had a lot of fun. Just to be out there with him. He is a legend. He is maybe the greatest to ever play. It was fun to hear stories and watch him play. He chipped in a couple of times and had some great shots. It was a blast.”

One of the rumors is that Roethlisberger at some point after they played together showed up at the club without Palmer, that Palmer got him onto the course, that Roethlisberger was rude to some kids, that the kids ended up being Palmer’s grandchildren, and that Palmer went berserk on Big Ben.

The source denies it, and since we don’t know whether the story is true or false we’ll defer to the source.

At this rate I give this blog about 2 weeks until it draws a libel suit

    • http://justwatchthegame.com JohnSteigerwald

I posted it. You read it. You judged it. Great country.

  • mike wenger

Go back to profootballtalk.com Steigy. This story is not true. Come on. We know you detest Big Ben but you are a little over the top with your mission of making him look like the worst human being to walk the face of the earth. All of your stories are based on rumors and nothing more. You have fallen fast since KDKA fired you.

  • TC

I’ve heard different versions of that story, but all of them ended with Mr. Palmer berating Ben and forcing him to sign autographs.

Note to Ben: Mr. Palmer always tips.

  • al clements

Ain’t true….Arnie likes the guy…played few rounds with him. Some things just ain’t so

  • Matt

I think this story is BS. Ben has golfed with Palmer on multiple occassions.

  • Sarcastic Sword

That is a great story…..I never liked Roethlisberger from the first time I heard him talk. Im guessing that there are many more stories like this about him and they will slowly, but surely be released for public consumption…
